For whatever reason, this tool has never really worked for me. instead of removing zits and other fun unwantables, it just throws hair or other random textures on top. im guessing this is user error, so any and all help is greatly welcomed.

also, any other ways and tools for clearing up skin that i probably dont know about would be good to mention:)

thanks guys

Lemme send you my picture, I need some hair on top!

Seriously, it's probably not using what you think it should be for the "source material" to replace the blemished area. I actually find the regular old clone tool to be more predictable and ultimately to do a better job. It may just that I'm old school, though ;-)

nah, i like cloning alot more too. i just really like the effect of awesome model smoothness everyone else seems to get with the spot healing

and no problem with the hair, at least its something im good at:)

I use a mixture of both, but I find that the spot healing works a lot faster and then I smooth a little with cloning on low opacity. I think the deal is that you just have to be careful where you take the source from and make sure you use a small brush to minimize the unwanted textures.

even if i do select texture i want, it comes out pretty dark(when its not hairy, that is). from what i can tell the settings are all normal. suggestion?

I'd suggest getting portrait professional since you do so many portraits. It would really be worth your while, cut your editing time to practically nothing. I'm pretty sure they have a free trial.

Mine will do this (cs4) if I have too many files opened. I have to close them down and restart PS then it works again.

Did you buy it? I have the trial, but it always puts a grid over the photo. I like what it does though.

If you are looking at the version that supports RAW then you also get the Photoshop plugin with it, so if you are editing in TIF then it will drop the 16bit tiff straight into Portrait-Pro with no loss of quality - a 5D mk2 update should be due soon - email the developer and find out when.. For those who havent tried it the newest version of p-pro is awesome.

Oh, and the studio version is colour managed as well.

they actually said it does support my RAW, but it doesnt. it doesnt even register that the files exist so there is no possibility of opening them in the program.

ok thanks about the tif, i didnt think about that. thanks!

Because you have chosen (checked the motif box and NOT the sample box only) a pattern in the choose your motif (background box). At the very top of the page you see your band aid on the upper left hand corner to the right there is the form, mode, source, sample, then Motif (I have the French Version of PS) but it affects a tiny box with different patterns like leaves, hair etc. That is what is selected on your desktop. Switch to sample to the left of that circle. That is it...Your now OK...

I am certain that this is the case.

Ben :-)

Actually that's the Healing Brush Tool: the Spot Healing Brush Tool doesn't have the sample/pattern toggle, it has a proximity match/create texture toggle...
