First of all this is a great resource strobist

How much do you want to spend?

*If you want wireless eTTL you'll need the top end cannon flash on camera and another off camera (much $$$$$$)

*A medium solution is a set of pocket wizards and a cheaper manual flash (medium $$$$) not eTTL

*My personal solution is a set of e-bay triggers (that I've modified the aerial) and cheaper manual flashes (SB-24 and SB-600) (minimal $$). I find this pretty reliable, not 100%, but good enough for my own enjoyment and learning.

* if you don't need wireless you could go with a sync cable.

Thanks for the reply! I'm not looking to spend very much on syncing and wired connections are fine (as long as they are long enough)

I have saved about £150 for a second flash unit. My other flash is very old and is a canon speedlite 300ez (OLD!)

The one thing I couldnt find how to make/buy on strobist was a hot shoe extension cord as they seem to concentrate on PC syncs. Any suggestions for where I could go for that?

300ez doesn't have a manual mode does it? You really should get something with a manual mode (there seem to be some new Chinese flashes with the strobist in mind (see strobist.com) but the nikon SB-24 etc are great, your other option may be a sigma flash that will do eTTL for that price.

As for a hotshoe sync cable you can get these pretty cheap of ebay. There may be eTTL ones pre-made or you just can get a hot shoe PC adapter like this ebay link.

Thanks so much for all the info, I'm looking at a Sunpak flash at the moment and seeing what people are saying about it. Looks ok and not too badly priced with manual mode as well.

Definitely check out Strobist. Especially the Lighting 101 series. It'll start you thinking about how to approach light in so many different situations. Start small with just one light & expand as your knowledge (and addiction) does.

Oh yeah...studying Joe McNally wouldn't hurt either.

Hey...have fun!
