So, let me clearly preface this by saying I, truly, in no way, shape or form mean to sound condescending or in any way a smart-butt... but this just made me laugh.
I was just googling around, looking at some HDR galleries here and there for no specific reason, and came across a link to a HDRI/Photomatix tutorial. I love reading tutorials, especially if they deal with tonemapping in Photomatix, so I gave it a looksee. The tutorial itself was rather bland, and at the point of discussing tonemapping, the author copped-out with ye' ole "experiment and see what looks good." *sigh* Oh, well -- not going to bookmark that one.
Next... I read the reader comments on the tutorial. Sometimes you can come across really interesting stuff in user comments, so I thought I'd at least skim them over. What I found was the final nail in the conspiracy great coffin -- HDR is really just all hype. It's just a great conspiracy to sell more stuff via web ads.
Confused? Just see the evidence below! Names have been removed to protect the innoce---err, I mean the truth-speaker:
"I am really frustrated about hdr technology. I have been reading a lot for months just to make an hdr photo but I couldn't. The reason behind that I think is the ambiguity in explaining" how to make hdr photos". Moreover, I think there is some kind of exaggeration in showing the results, because I donĂ¢€™t think that those photos displayed in some websites are results of those explanations and tutorials. There is some kind of photo processing and colore treatment that they won't tell any one about."
I knew it! See, it's all just a conspiracy. If this guy spent MONTHS following tutorials and can't reproduce the results... Well, it's all as clear as could be, isn't it? Later in the same post, he brings it home:
"What does it mean to take three photos with different exposures? Is it with different shutter speed or different EV values (+2/0/-2) or they are the same?"
See? It's all that pesky physics and book-learnin' and ecksposhure talk! Just the language of the conspirators if you ask me...
"If I should use different shutter speed, what are the speeds should I use for the hdr?"
Further evidence! Months of reading, and simple questions like this still remain unanswered! No one has revealed the correct shutter speeds for HDR photos! Why are they hiding this information? WHY???
"Finally, would any one please give me the short and easy steps for making hdr, I tried the ways mentioned in most websites but I failed. I donĂ¢€™t think that the whole issue would take more than three or four short sentences. Those websites make it longer just to see there ads."
Preach on, brother! If it's not explainable in three to four short sentences, it's just not worth understanding!
AH! And, yes, those website ads! They're in the conspiracy, too! And webmasters! And Bill Gates -- I'm sure someone involved is running Windo--- [ sound of a gunshot through a silencer, followed by the whispy engine of a Black Helicopter ] +++ATH0 DISCONNECTED |

I think DPChallenge is involved in this conspiracy as well. First, however, we need to assemble a crack team of our best Mac using photographers to rescue cdrice. Might be a good opportunity for an action shot challenge.
I would volunteer, but the wife doe not like me staying out late. |

Ha ha ha - I got the most kick out of:

I will just say that maybe this guy shouldnt own a camera. We used to make things so simple in the Air Force and we called it "Army Proof", sometimes people still found ways of messing it up. Today's technology is pretty "Army Proof" and this guy is still messing it up. |

I don't specifically know what that one means, but it is a modem ATTENTION code, preceded by an escape sequence.
