I grew up in the shadow of that mountain, and I prefer to remain IN the shadow, not ABOVE the shadow. |

Oh man I love that stuff. Just did some sweet couloir climbs this season that you probably wouldn't like either, though it's only steep on one side. I love 4th class terrain. If things line up, I'll be doing this sometime over the summer.
Capitol Peak Knife Edge
edited because the picture was bigger than I thought. My bad. Seriously click on it though. It's pretty sweet. 322Kb

That is a great picture, one I'll never take unless I'm safely strapped into a helicopter! |

I would prefer to be on that edge and in control myself than to be strapped to a Flying Vibration Machine.......Helicopters don't fly, the earth repels them......... |

Sorry - that little phrase reminded me of the time I visited an island in the middle of Lake Titicaca at around 12,500 feet. I had to reach the top of the island to get to the other side where the somewhat primative boat to get me back to Pino would dock. That explanation was used (and was completely wasted) on me. The island was described as being higher than the Empire State Building. I made the trek, and am still here to tell the story. Yeah, it was beautiful up there.
Only steep on one side? HA!
:-))
Back to the subject at hand now...
PS that's a whopper of a fine image.

But I wouldn't be able to control myself, so I'd rather be in a chopper with a pro at the controls |

wow that's awesome. I'm not afraid of heights, but that made me dizzy! It makes me wonder how many people get to the top and just fall over from vertigo...jeez that would suck, lol.
now the real question is: Did he take any photos?

Yeah I thought that was pretty lame. I know a of a guy who has a whole bunch of mountaineering videos like that... wonder if he's had the same thing happen.
Jdroullard, any idea what song it was? |

He's just a little late for the "From Above" Challenge. : )
Cool video.
Helicopters don't fly, they just beat the air into submission.

Now that voting is over... here's a photo from one of my couloir climbs.
The "vertigo" inducing factor is actually higher behind me, which is solid crumbly rock almost straight down for around 1400 ft to the lake below. The shame about photographing this stuff and seeing the videos is that you lose so much. Things almost always look less steep in photos and the scale is lost. One thing that's really lost in my photo, for instance, is that it was completely calm and silent. I could whistle and hear it bounce back over and over against the ridge ahead and below. I guess it's one of those things that either strikes a cord with you or doesn't though. To each their own, right? |
