Just a heads up that there are some file corruption issues with Synctoy when backing up to a home NAS. Seems to be fine using it with external USB drives though. They're working on the issue but it's not resolved yet.

Indeed. Personally I love Araxis Merge... But just to throw out another related one for those of us who also can't catalogue clearly: Araxis FDF ("find duplicate files"). It only works on Mac OS X, but seems a great way to locate and compare files that have duplicate content regardless of their name or location!

Just as a follow up, I just installed my drobo yesterday with 2 1TB hard drives. I have to say it acted like true plug and play should and the simplicity is worth the premium you may pay over other back-up storage solutions. Transferring files over is moderately slow when you are doing a few hundred gigabytes (using USB 2.0), but it's doable. I plan on storing all pictures and video on this system.

So a thumbs up to the drobo and those who recommended it.

I'm at the same place Dr Achoo was a little while ago, trying to make a final decision about RAID 1 vs Drobo, and I think I just decided on Drobo as well. Does anyone else use it? I'd really like to hear from those who have tried it.

I hope to use it not just to store all my photos, but as the primary location for a Lightroom catalog & just like an internal drive. Is this okay?

do the drives you use have to be the same size?

or do you just loose the extra space?
eg a 500gb and 300 gb drive will be like using 3 300gb drives?
