My girlfriend just spilled powerade zero in her macbook. We pulled the battery out which had liquid in it and have dried the keyboard out as much as I can. I also pulled out the ram, which was wet also and used some compressed air to dry and blow the little liquid left from inside the battery. Currently it is sitting upside down like an old pop up tent. That is as much as I could think of what to do. Besides not spilling in the first place, does any one have any more advice on how to proceed? I have the ram out, and we have some silica packets. Would it be a good idea to put those in a bag and seal to get it completely dry? I could do the same with the battery also. Thanks again for any advice.

Does applecare cover spills like this?

No, Applecare only covers defective apple products. So if your motherboard randomly fails, they will cover it. But if it is your fault that it failed, they won't. In other words, accidental damage is not covered.

Thank you, that is what I thought.

A dunk in alcohol will help get the goop out of things by dissolving the sugary stuff. It will aid with the drying as well. After the alcohol dunk, put it where it will be warm for a couple of days, like on a warming pad or where the heat comes out of the refrigerator. Dry rice is another good moisture absorber, and it is relatively cheap. Put the machine in a cotton pillow case, then in a wastebasket or the like, and pour rice around it.
I saved a dunked blackberry by using the alcohol trick, and it worked well until I retired it from just being worn out.
Use a spritz pump bottle to apply the alcohol.

So I should spray the alcohol pretty heavily through the keyboard and into the battery? Fluid was in the battery battery as well. I think all I have in the house is 91% Isopopyl alchohol, will that work or should run out to the store? I was going to just pour it inside, is this not the way I should do it?
I was going to take the computer apart and wipe down the components as well as I could with pec pads and alcohol, but was stopped because my gf parent's believe it will be covered by applecare and by opening it up will void the warranty. I told them it was voided when there was the spill but really could not force the issue.

If you have distilled water available, you could cut the alcohol with a little water to get it to somewhere around 70%, but I don't think that the 91% will cause any more damage than is already done. It may possibly loosen some adhesives at full strength.
I would definitely wait several days or a week before trying to power it back up. It takes a long time for moisture to draw out of the places where things touch. At least the drink was not a sugary one which will help with the sticky issue.
I checked the posts in the Mac forum, and they seem to agree with the alcohol treatment.
I wish you the best of luck in reviving the machine.

Thanks Waddy, Scott, and Steve,
Computer has been soaked in combination of distilled water and alcohol and is sitting in a sealed container with more rice than is probably needed. Now just wait a week and see what happens.

Powerade...?

It's not the most conventional way to try an upgrade but quite unique.

No advice. Sorry bout that and I hope things work out.

Tell your girlfriend to start drinking Apple Juice and things like this would be just too ironic to actually happen.

Good news!
After a week, we put the battery back in the macbook, attached the power cord and it started up and is currently working!
Bad news, is the battery which was dripping blue powerade, is now toast and is not recognized by the computer. So most likely a new battery is in order. I am not convinced it will last forever, as it seems if there is any residue left it will corrode the circuitry soon, if it makes it a couple weeks I think it will be ok.

For anyone who is madly searching what to do and finds this thread, Here is what I did/suggest.
1) Act quickly.
2) Pull out the battery and unplug the computer.
3) Pour out the rest of the fluid, whatever it is.
4) Take out the RAM, if it happened again I would take out the hardrive.
5) Set the computer open so it looks like an old school tent.
6) Get a mixture of Ispropyl Alcohol and distilled water(I used 5 parts alcohol to distilled water) in a spray bottle and spray the keyboard a lot and also into the spot where the battery, RAM and hard drive are. Let it drip all over, you want everything that got wet the first time to get wet again. If it was my computer I would have opened up the whole thing and pulled out the guts and rinsed off all the components with distilled water/alcohol. You goal is to wash off all sugar residue. It will not hurt your computer if it is unplugged.
7) Buy a couple bags of rice and put the computer in a pillow case, still opened up. We tried it closed and checked it after a day and it was still quite wet.
8) Put the computer in a rubbermade tub and and seal it with saran wrap and wait a week, don't open it up! Do not power it up if it is still wet.
9) Think good thoughts, and don't put drinks near your laptop.

Thanks everyone for all your input and help!
My girlfriend will only be drinking apple juice at her computer now. :P

Glad to hear not all was lost and things worked out alright (sorta).

Or you could just get a thinkpad. ;)

That must have been some serious computing if she had to drink Powerade while she was doing it!

Just kidding.

Hope you were able to rescue the lappie.

That's not really an improvement. I suggest drinking distilled water with a twist of alcohol.

I suggest an apple spirit, like Calvados

OMG! Do you sue Dunkin' Donuts when you spill a hot coffee on your lap if it's not labelled "HOT"!?!?

Your statement is laughable! I think the skull & crossbones on the bottle is a better hint than your sage advice to not drink it!

Aaaack! I'm blind! Why?? Why did I listen to Slippy's advice?? *sob*

...I heard a glass of anti-freeze cures the blindness though. Don't bother to warn me against drinking anti-freeze - I won't read your posts - I'm blind - remember?

*drinks anti-freeze and jumps off cliff*
