The crappy $12 remote release for my Canon 40D isn't working, it probably needs a funky, esoteric, new battery, but I'm not where I can buy any. Plus, I'd prefer to do bulb exposures without it anyway.
SO...
Is there some way I can (without any remote) set the dumbass 40D to bUlb mode:
1. Press the shutter button to open the shutter.
2. Wait whatever amount of time longer than 30 seconds that pleases me.
3. Press the shutter button to close the shutter.
... all without the use of some extra piece of equipment?
Even better if I can open the shutter with the two -or- ten second timer, then press to close.
I doubt this is possible, and it really pisses me off. It's just so stupid. I don't have my manual with me, but I seem to remember the option to do bulb mode, but you have to physically keep the shutter button pressed down to go beyond 30 seconds, which is just frikken idiotic.

Easy big boy....
The manual does not describe any way other than that you described. I tried the timer on mine and it would .not trigger the shutter with it set on bulb.
You are right, it is a lame system |

Short out the two bottom pins on the cable release input - when you want to close the shutter, remove the short - use a very think piece of wire (you may have to file it down to be thin enough)..
If it screws your camera though dont blame me, but should work. |

First position simply turns on the camera, second position also enables the wheel on the back.

One position is basic on, the other position enables the thumb wheel. I think. |

A bit of history; it's called "bulb" mode because back in the old daze they squeezed air through a rubber tube to actuate the shutter. As long as you kept the bulb squeezed, the shutter was open. None of this namby-pamby "shutter mechanism" stuff, no preset times, none of that good stuff. You counted down in your head.
Then, a little less far back in the daze, when mechanical shutters became commonplace, they were spring-actuated basically, and they (the good ones anyway) actually DID have a "T" function, where first click opened and second click closed, in addition to the bulb function. I liked those.
But then when we started having electronic shutters, well, things changed. Why? I think because holding the shutter open is a major current drain on an electronic shutter. So if they had a T function, we'd be dealing with all sorts of power-off issues? I don't know. It's weird, 'cuz we have mirror lockup modes that require 2 clicks, first for mirror and second for shutter, so that has to be a current drain too, so WTF?
My remote, a simple one, has a sliding tab that'll lock it open in bulb, so that serves as a T mode for me. But then I love remotes and you don't, so you're in sad shape, and I sympathize, but only a little bit, because... well... you're SLIPPY, and how much sympathy can one spare for a slippy? It's a slippery slope of sympathy, since you seem to need so much of it...
Peace out, R |

Set "bulb", push button, duct tape down, walk away. Perfect slippy move :-)

| Although the 40D has no dedicated bulb setting on the mode dial, there *is* a bulb setting. Set mode to "M", then set shutter to Bulb. It's at the far long end of the shutter speed scale, one click past 30 seconds. AFAIK, this is a true Bulb mode, in other words the shutter button needs to stay down as long as you want the shutter open. |

Well yeah, we know that, that's what we've been TALKING about. But Slippy isn't happy with bulb, and cable releases, he wants a true "Time" setting where one click opens shutter and one click closes shutter, like in the old mechanical shutter days. He wants to push a button and walk from his camera, and he wants to do it without a shutter release. Hence, the duct tape suggestion :-)

And hopefully he puts it on more gently than when he tries to rip a phone book apart. |

| This is what Slippy needs. I use it with my 40D and I can set the time and walk away and it will close the shutter for me. The time lapse feature is nice too. |

Yeah, absolutely, but Slippy hates cable releases, LOL...
