Im going to Argentina (bariloche) on the next week.
I have four lenses, but only room for three on my bag.
Canon EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM
Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS
Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 USM Macro
Canon EF 75-300mm f/4.0-5.6 IS USM
I will take the 10-22 for sure, because im looking forward to shoot some landscapes. Dunno what will be the other two.
The 18-55 is good for overall shotting.
The 100 is the fastest and sharper, but dont have IS and has only one focal distance.
The 75-300 has a good zoom range, the longer reach, but is soft on the end and is slower.
What would you do? Wich lens to keep at home?

whoa!! bad news-- they're all necessary!
I'd give up the 18-55 for the following reasons:
My favorite is the 100mm -- it's so incredibly sharp and I love playing with macros (can't tell from my profile - I need to find more bugs!)
Have to have a long lens, so the 75-300 is a must.
You already said your 10-22.
I'd leave the 18-55 and hope the 22 would be sufficient! |

You'd be surprised at how often you'll want the long lens for landscape so take the 75-300.
If you do a lot of macro then you'll miss having the 100 with you. If you don't then take the 18-55 to fill the gap.
You're missing a mid-range zoom in you're arsenal.
Ideally, you'd want something like the 10-22, mid-range zoom, 75-300. |

| What do you plan on shooting other than landscapes? Macro? Wildlife? Street? Having and idea of what you might shoot would help me decide but I'm one of those guys who always wishes I would have brought the one lens I left behind, so now I find a way to take them all. Ridiculous? Yes but always prepared..lol. |

i would either leave the 18-55 b/c optically its not fantastic and i personally would be willing to sacrifice the 22-55mm range. or id consider leaving the 75-300 b/c the 18-55 has IS and unless i went on a wildlife shooting mission 100mm would be enough for my general purposes. youre right that the 10-22 is a MUST. i just got one and it hasnt left my camera yet i LOVE it. and i wouldnt ever leave the 100 behind b/c a) its a macro and ur going to a country with beautiful flora and micro fauna and b) i never leave my prime behind b/c its fast its sharp and its simple. have fun on your trip :)
edit: im an idiot... i didnt realize the 75-300 had IS ( ive just never looked into buying it). leave the 18-55, thatd be a fairly easy choice for me.

| Why not put the 4th lens in your suitcase-- then you have all 4 on your trip and just carry what 3 you want each day in your gear bag.. |

Hey guys and girls!
Thanks for all the advice! The different oppinions just reflected my own thoughts and doubts... each one has its own reasonableness, and every choice depends really on what i intend to do...
This afternoon i went down to a gear shop trying to find some attachment for my bag, so i would be able to carry the 4th lens... unfortulately i didnt found a compatible one...
Coming back to home i just remembered that i also need room to my speedlite, and realized that i would not be able to carry all the gear on my gearbag... unless i sacrifice another lens to carry the speedlite...
Now i think i would do what buzzrock just said... carry everything on my suitcase and then select the setups on each walk...
Anyway... looking forward to buy a bigger bag... (until i buy an 100-400 or an 70-200... when i will be able to restart the ¨no room¨ saga... =P )
Thanks vawendy, cpanaioti, trevytrev, michaelmonn and buzzrock!! And yes lej!! One day i will go to Colombia, thanks for the invitation!! |
