I really thought this would do better than a sub 5. Please give me your opinion on this image.

Being noob to this I don't feel that qualified to critique technique etc ... nor did I vote in this competition. Until I have more experience I'm not going to vote in competitions which I enter myself.

But here goes ...

I'm suprised that the photo got sub 5. If the photograph is not a bad photograph in itself the lowest I hand out is 5. I would only pump a 4 or occasionally 3 out if the photo is truly bad. Admitidly the cloud is a bit of spoiler and like your own comment I would have spot edited it out. Having said that I'd also be tempted to crop it out ... there ain't much going on in the half of the picture.

The photo is truly beautiful in its colouring and shape of the flag. But for me the shot does not really link up to the 'from the ground up' categorisation - sure you were on the ground and the flag is up in the air but this has not really added anything unusual or artistic to the photograph. I suppose one could argue that point for the winning entry too except I guess the detail in the birds feathering could only ever have been acheived by shooting from the ground up.

I'm told by those in the know that a photo with a large uniform block of colour, like blue sky, is not good and I suspect this might account for the sub 5. For my money though I think the exception proves the rule and for this photo I think that uniform blue sky really works.
