Does sony have firmware updates? specifically for the F717?

There was one for the very first generation, to my knowledge. None after that. I guess, it just works.

First generation being the generation that had focusing issues?

Yes. It was a very small number of models compared to the total number sold in the meantime. September 2002, I believe, was the last date of production of 717s efffected by this issue.

Here is a link listing all updates for the 717. All updates are for Windows machines. None are required for Macs.
If the link doesn't work, just do an internal search at Sony.
