Just been forced to watch Britains next top model and i noticed on a lot of the shoots they photographer used a ringflash.

ino its not the same but has anyone used one of These before?

The results any good? I have a EX580II btw

Also how much do the proper Ring flashes cost?

no , don't know, but at that price and with the free shipping and handling, it may be well worth it as a practice start up one!

I have been wanting a ring flash for macro shots as I often am fighting to get a fast enough shutter speed due to a lack of lighting.
I only have an older model 420ex flash though and I cannot seem to find a ring flash that is noted to work with it and the 50D combination. I have found the Bower ring flashes that do not use your regular flash - they have their own hot shoe controller. Has anyone tried the Bower models? Are they any good?

I use one of these Phoenix Smartflash on my 5D MKII and on my 450D before that. (Much cheaper than Canon's own) Works great.
The problem I had was me, or my lens creating a shadow on my subject. It doesn't matter now though as the flash cuts through it.

The ringflashes that fashion people use are very different from what you posted.
They are more like this and usually quite expensive.
The one you are looking at may give good results, but it may not.
Some discussion on Flickr.
I have an Orbis and am happy with it. Power is definitely limited. There is also the Rayflash, which wasn't an option for me since I have an SB-900 and they won't fit it.

The speedlight adapters attempt to give you the functionality of the stuff like the first one I posted, but the power is not there. That's the price compromise.

The orbis is the same sort of idea as the one i posted? Could you post a example picture you have taken with it?

I don't have any portraits that are readily available on this drive currently. What sort of photos are you looking for? I've used it with success for macro stuff. This was taken using it, with speedlight hand held camera top right. It will give you those typical halos around portraits.
If you wanted I could shoot a photo or two in the sort that you're looking to do if you want.

ETA: Yes, the Orbis is similar, so is the Rayflash. The Rayflash is probably closer because you still mount your speedflash to your hot shoe with it. With the orbis, you do not, you hand hold it or use the bracket they are supposedly making for it (some DIY'ers have made their own like an old flash bracket).

Or really, there are LOTS of Orbis photos out there. They had a contest, have a gallery on their site, and I ::think:: there's a gallery on Flickr too....

Thanks Derek. I would want to be using it for portriaghts really. So if you can show me a couple of portraights you have taken using it, that would be great.

I have been eyeing up this one.
Ringflash

Anyone have one and how effective is it?

That's an honest to god ringflash.

A photographer whose work I was looking at on a different forum said he uses that same model and really likes it. The shots he did with it are great.

What made you choose the Orbis over the Ray-flash?

Compatibility!

The orbis list

Orbis Flash Compatibility

The orbis(tm) works with most flash/strobes straight out of the box, with no need for any extra parts or conversion add-ons !

The orbisâ„¢ has been tested with the Canon 300TL, 420EX, 430EX, 540EZ, 550EX, 580EX I and II, Nikon SB28, SB600, SB800, SB900, Cosmos 360, Vivitar 283, Olympus FL36R, FL50, Sunpak PF30X and 5000, Sony F56, Minolta 5200 and Sigma 500, Metz 48 and Metz 58 and Pentax AF540.

If your flash/strobe is similar in size and shape to these, it will almost definitely be compatible with the orbisâ„¢.
