Well, I guess I am going to be taking a car out to CA from FL in a couple of wks....my niece has bought my mother-in-laws car from her (2001 MB C320 w/50K miles - barely broke in) soooo my 2 daughters and I are going to drive it out to Sacramento, CA....

Our first two days will be very hard - straight line keep driving - then once we get west we will be able to enjoy the area better. We are taking 6/7 days to drive this so here are my questions....

From Amarillo, TX going to Durango, CO (Brother lives there) to the Grand Canyon via Monument Valley to Disneyland (can't believe I'm doing this as they both work at Disney World...but they want to do the California Experience) then north to Sacramento, CA (we are flying home)

Does anyone have any "must see's?" on the pathway???

I am trying to find out where this one picture was shot but they haven't responded. Would love to know where some of these are and but I am sure they are way out of the way for us...

Thanks for any tips...

fist one is car henge somewhere in nebraska. second set is antelope canyon near page arizona, near the grand canyon. one or the other is on the way depending if you go via St.Louis and Reno, or Antelope valley is on the way if you take the southern route, via Las Vegas. If you can take the heat, there is alot more to shoot on the southern route.

Similar to some of the sandstone you posted is The Wave which shouldn't be too far out of your way. There are lots of other areas with cool sandstone like that but many may not want to tell you exactly where they are because they're off the beaten track and people like to keep it that way.

Bottom set is Antelope canyon, I understand you need a pass to get in there, it̢۪s not expencive, but is a drawing type thing. Antelope canyon is located around Page AZ, and by the map is just about 6̢۪s out of Durango. And a easy drive to the North rim of the Grand Canyon (the cooler by 10-15 degrees side) after that head to St. George UT, and catch 15 south to Las Vegas then on to California.

10-15 degrees cooler is sounding real good....how far from Antelope to the North Rim...about 3 hours??? and here is my other problem...where to stay...1 we don't have reservations at the lodge (the only lodging available there that I know of) and 2 it is outrageous in price to stay there...or are you saying to stay in St. George, UT for the night??

There are not too expensive lodgings at the canyon if you want to get those sunrise /sunset shots, and lots of cheaper barebones motel 6 type hotels along the way.

Some other spots to think of of you have time you could consider Chaco Canyon, historic route 66, and Death Valley are all on your route if you have the time.

Yea it is about 3 hours to the North rim from Page, and from the Grand Canyon to St. George about 2 1/2 hours. St. George would be a lot cheaper, but the road from Fredonia AZ, to St. George is a llllllllooooooonnnnnggggggg hour and a half, but you do get to pass the infamous town of Colorado city, AZ,polygamy, Warren Jeffs thing.I can look around St. George for prices on rooms, I live here, I wish I could offer more help, but the next few weeks have us moving to Hurricane UT.

If you are going to go all the way up to St George, you might add Mesa Verde to your list

And Zion NP :)

Well, I think that we will change our route to go to Antelope Canyon...it should really be great..then to the South Rim and on to LA...

Thanks for all your tips...

From Sacramento you can take a day trip to Calaveras Big Trees.

Park Web Site

Some of the larger trees in the US. Some very nice photo ops. Located in Arnold, California.

Sequoias are more massive. Redwoods can get taller. 275 ft for Sequoias, 365 ft for Redwoods. But Sequoias can be 40ft diameter at the base of the trunk.

Otherwise both are very similar as far as the wood and bark go. Redwoods live along the coast of Northern Cal, and Oregon. Giant Sequoias only on the west side of the Sierras, in California.

The wood seems to last forever. There are carved signatures in downed trees in the park from the 1800's. One of the stumps in the park, was used at various times for a dance floor, a bowling alley, and a hotel. (Not all at once.)

I talked to one of the photography guides, we have to be there by 10:45 am (I think we can do that from Durango) then we get done by 1:15 pm then off to Grand Canyon...I think this will be way better than driving through Monument Valley, we'll get to see some of that...

A little late to chime in but the Canyon X tour is awesome, the guide although possibly as old as the canyons was wonderful and they only take a small amount of people at a time. The oh so wonderful miss JulietNN had taken me on this tour earlier this year and it ended up just us two and the guide in two big slot canyons which was awesome and easy to get shots without a hundred tourists in the way :)

I have a LOT more but here is 3 I have managed to post from that tour...
