This is just messing with the natural order of things...

WTF!

Yup...I watched it. They got one lucky goal.. the first goal was pretty good.

What was starkly apparent on the Free State Stadium pitch, was the superior athleticism of the Americans.

Brute force tops innate skill??

You can see what happened there, Spain went into the match with the attitude, it's the 'USA' this will be an easy one. Then when the USA got a goal the put all ten men back in their own box and made it impossible for Spain to get an equaliser. The second goal would be a result of Spain pushing everyone forward and leaving themselves open at the back.

All credit to the USA for a strategy that beat the European champions!

Could also be that the Spaniards, all of whom play at the highest level in Europe (Premiership, La Liga etc.) are completely knackered after the season that has just finished and just could match the stamina of the Yanks.. still, Kudos for the USA for this win - wonder what odds Paddypower was giving for a 2 - 0 USA win?

Completely knackered??? I don't know. I don't think that there is anything, short of injury, that a player couldn't recover from in a week.

I agree, if anything they'll be fitter for it. I'm inclined to agree with Covert_Oddity, Spain got complacent. Not to take it away from the Yanks though, I didn't see the game but it seems like they had a corker, and they've been keeping the pressure on throughout the cup.

This should shut a few Liverpool fans up for a while anyway.

Was wondering how long that would take!

Isn't that funny?

Just in the town I live (app. 15,000):
1300 kids play soccer (recreational)
650 kids play baseball
250 kids play American football

We have 22 teams in our travel club (soccer)
We have 5 adult teams (recreational soccer)

Just out of curiosity, how do you get these numbers?

Kids are grown and gone and I'm not up-to-date with the statistics. But I was very well aware of them when I served on the recreational boards (soccer and township). About 15 years ago I was heavily involved with soccer leagues in our township. We had similar statistics to those that HeiSch mentioned.
Actually ours was even more stunning since there was virtually NO American football in our area. Since that time it has changed and we now do have football, however, soccer is still the major youth sport. It is especially evident during tournament time when you have herds of soccer teams roaming all over the place!

Simple,
I'm VERY involved with Rec Soccer, Club Soccer, Adult soccer,...
Friends of mine are on the board of the other sports groups.
They all run under our town's sports commision, numbers come for registration and team assignments.

5 years ago my wife and I started the adult league (co-ed, just in our town)
Oh and I forgot the one I had the most fun with: I coached a team for 3 years:
The Soccer-Moms (all skill levels, all fitness levels)
We had so much fun.

I had to stop playing after seriously injuring my knee, since then I'm "just" coaching :)

If only South Africa could beat Brazil tonight. Imagine, USA vs SA in the final. That would be ridiculous.

That's cool. Like I said, I was just curious.

I don't have exact numbers, but for baseball and football (the two I'm involved with currently), we have probably close to 400 playing baseball and close to 500 playing american football in a town about a 1/3 (or smaller) than yours.

I'm not sure how many play soccer, but I know the local chapter of AYSO isn't real big, one middle school has a girls team and a boys team, but the other doesn't, and the high school has a girls' varsity and a boys' varsity -- no JV that I know of. No club teams on this end of the county, though there is one on the other side of the county -- one team per age group.

Needless to say, though soccer is growing in popularity, our area is still a "football" county. :)

If you want to see Soccer in full swing here in the US: July 24-28 is the US Club Soccer National CHampionship Cup Tournament in VA Beach.
Not "too" far from NC :)
top US youth team are competing there. 13 year olds through I think 18 year olds.

Soccer is a good sport all kids should play. Well, till they are big enough for real football. ;)

Soccer Hater
(not really a hater I just don't like it at all-"to each his own")

I have to aggree with you on this one :)
When the kids get really big, they then play football.
They couldn't keep up with the others running any longer :)

BTW Brasil won 4-3, so US plays Brasil
