Hi,

I'm planning one or two short photo trips in mid July to either the Adirondacks or Allegheny parks. Never been to either of them before, so I'm looking for some advice as to where to go, what to shoot. I'm driving down from Toronto and the schedule is completely flexible right now - probably looking at 3 days/2 nights for each trip.

It's a pretty open question, I know, but so's my schedule!

TIA

Hmm...well the Adirondack park is quite large and encompasses numerous towns, villages, lakes, etc. Do you have a destination or an area, as in town, you will be visiting?

I have been camping in Lake Placid numerous times in the summer, I have to say, the place is paradise. Lake Placid, and the surrounding region offer tons to do outdoors wise, and there is usually some multi-day rugby tourney/equestrian match/lacrosse tourney/ironman triathlon going on in Lake Placid.

If you go a little outside the town, to Keene and Keene Valley then you can find some great trailheads to go hiking.

Other than what I read on various websites, no I don't. Not having been there before at all, I'm looking for some first hand recommendations as opposed to taking pot-luck.

I've been traveling to the Adirondacks for the last 16 years, every year at least once.

I must say it is beautiful and I consider it a 2nd home.

Tupper Lake is where we have traditionally stayed when I was younger, there are cabins available with tennis courts and volley ball and golf nearby and the fishing is very good. Caught my family record 35in Pike there :D From there you can take all sorts of day trips up/down the Racquet (sp?) River, and the lower Saranac lakes.

For the last 8 years, however, we go 'back country' canoeing in the Fish Creek Ponds, and area near the Fish Creek Campground, also very close to the Saranac lake chain, and it is absolute heaven. Portages and little streams connect dozens of small lakes, you don't see too many people, and it is just gorgeous. Last year, for the first time, I saw 2 bald eagles.

We usually camp on Follensby Clear Pond, paddling a few miles in from the road access, and finding a campsite on one of the lake's many islands. From there, you can make 'loops' around to different lakes in the area, come back for a twilight swim. At night, the stars reflect off the still water.

If you dont like camping, rent a canoe from the outfitters near Fish Creek Ponds and travel up into little square pond and floodwood pond, the 2 creeks that you go through are marvelous.

Here are some pics from over the years...

This was actually taken a coupe of weeks ago at Allegany State PArk. We go there every year for vacation. Beautiful park with probably lots to photograph. We usually just hang out by the fire though. We used to live in the Adirondacks. Hug edifference in park size. Allegany may be a bt easier to narrow down than the Adirondacks. Cabin rental at Red House in Allegany is weekly. I am not sure about tenting. The towns surrounding Allegany are dirt poor, but could make for some interesting shooting. Not sure what the hotel situation is like. There is a casino there - they may have rooms. Not sure. Both parks are beautful. Allegany may just be less overwhelming. Adirondack mountains and lakes are stunning though. I am probably no help. ;)

i live in the southern adirondacks and must say that the views overlooking lake george are quite spectacular especialy off of prospect mtn and buck mountain ( great sunset shots). also you might want to check out north creek (old train station where roosevelt found out mckinley died) and tahawas aka mount marcy ( tallest mtn in NY) spectacular views of marcy and the high peaks from algonquin peak ( quite a hike) or skylight ( still quite a hike) i hope you enjoy your trip :) if you go to lake george and have any questions about specific shooting locations ...
