Does anyone know anything about a Sigma 400mm 5.6 AF Canon mount lens? It is a white/light gray lens, has a 72mm filter size and apparently does not say anything about HSM or macro.
Any back ground of info you might have would be most welcome. I can't seem to find any info about this lens online. |

All the reviews or information I come up with have a black lens shown. The link you gave did not have an image at all, so I can't be sure. The lens I'm asking about is a white or light gray finish lens. |

The grey lens is older but still APO, the older versions of the lens were grey then they made the black, see this LINK
Older Sigma lenses 'sometimes' produced an error 99 on Canon bodies. This should be fine I think as it is a MF lens

oh ok. well i did find another link to a german forum, where one guy states that he had a white sigma 400 f5.6, which he used on a 1d, and apparently it only worked on M or Av but only wide open. i heard the same from a firend of mine, who had a sigma 100-300 f4 that also couldn't be stopped down on his 40d, thatswhy he sold it very soon. apparently most older sigma lenses need to be sent in to be "converted" to fit the digital standards or something.
the guy on the german forum further states that after he had the white version he got the 400 f5.6 apo that not only could be stopped down on his dslr but was also of superior IQ than the white one. |

Here's a link to a forum about a sigma 400mm lens. As MAK said the older lens produced an error code on Canon bodies. this forum said something about Canon rechipping their newer bodies 20D and newer. So if you're looking at getting a used one, make sure its compatible with your 40D. Hope this helped.
Later
a forum link
Rereading that forum post, it sounds like Sigma "re-chipped" and some older Sigma lenses may or may not work with newer Canon bodies. It also said Sigma can "re-chip" an older lens (but will cost $$$).

| Thanks for the information. That was about as far as I had gotten as well. It's a bit of a drive to get to this lens to try it out, which appears to be my only real option if I decide it's worth a shot. |
