I have the Nikkor 18-70mm f/3.5-4.5G IF-ED and am considering the 17-55. From what I'm reading it seems like the 18-70 is about as sharp, and maybe has a bit more barrel distortion, and CA. My copy of the 18-70 doesn't seem to suffer from vignetting.
Is it really worth the extra $1000 for the 17-55? |

Looks like you mainly shoot outdoors. I don't think it would be worth it to you. |

I have both...and I would say yes.
Also consider it because f2.8 vs f4.5. And the confidence level increases with the 17-55 attached to your camera..lol Sharp wide open
Wide open, indoors, window light.
Probobly not the best example, but it's a good oportunity to post up a cute doggie shot. =) |

I went with a Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 due to the cost of the Nikon. I just recently received it and have not used it enough to make comments on it, but reviews said it was pretty comparable overall to the Nikon.

Although I have no experience with third party lenses, I have to say I cannot live with my 17-55 lens.
Five stars from me!! |

Let me help you out. PM on it's way with my address and a couple of bucks for shipping. Heck, I'm even going to throw in my 18-70 that I never use anymore too. ;)
edit to fix the snips

Similar discussion here.
I, too, swear by my Nikon 17-55, and don't know how I would live withOUT it, ;) but my primary application is low-light shooting. As mentioned before, if you're shooting primarily outdoors/landscapes/etc, those extra stops might not matter too much.
BTW, cute doggie, Nicholas! Woof!

| Since I bought the 17-55 I rarely use anything else for the day to day stuff. The 18-70 has not even been moved. It's a fabulous lens. |

| I make money with my 17-55 shooting weddings & portraits. Therefore for me it's literally worth the cost :) |

| It is great for indoor shooting and even outdoors if you are shooting at night or in very shaded locations. Is it worth the money? That depends on what your needs are. Definately worth the cost if you can justify it. That being said. I tend to not use mine that often, Last time it was on my camera was around xmas for our annual family gtg... Main reason I do not use it often is because it is expensive and I do not want to risk damaging it while I am just out walking around. |

I think so.
It's on my camera most of the time. |

Thanks for the input everyone. But I'm still not convinced it's worth the $1000 more than the 18-70. I have the Sigma 10-20 but I use my 18-70 for most of the landscapes I do. I use a tripod, mirror lock up, and cable release to get the sharpest image possible. I know I don't need 2.8 for landscapes, but I have heard the 17-55 is more contrasty. (BTW I am not considering the 12-24)
I'm in a fortunate place to have the money to get the 17-55, but I'm still not sure if it would be a good move. |

| FWIW It is a great lens. Well worth the money if you can make yourself comfortable shelling out that kind of cash. I was a little gun shy at first when I went out to buy it But once I got to play with it a little bit I was more than satisfied and still to this day feel it was a very worthy investment. |
