I'm assuming that's the biggest dust spot though so if he can send you details of that removed surely the rest will follow suit?

If he can show that the dust was removed legally, I'm sure it would be reinstated. We've done it before.

Lutchenko, do you by any chance play baseball? Cause this image looks like it's been juiced.

Jump to it Will :) Rooting for you mate, not that I'm having a dig at SC I guess most people would have made that call under the circumstances, but it must really hurt to be DQ'd when you know you have done nothing wrong - I will without fail be writing down my steps from now on!

Hey will, it looks like the SC are almost waiting for this to be reinstated as I made it into the top 10 but still showing 11th (as is everybody else).

I'm guessing this should have been cleared up earlier so maybe you should have given the editing steps at submission time? and, as it is a studio shot with controlled lighting you might have been better off reshooting (cropping it out would probably have messed with the composition).

I've had a 14 day wait for a validation to do with backgrounds as well so feel for you - my fingers are crossed that you push me back onto the second page Sir!

Would love to see how this was done legally as well, I am rooting for you, but I am thinking that is far too big to remove through the method you mention - although I know MAK had a shot where there was a spot that he managed to make vanish through levels and stuff so its not impossible.

The thing that's really got me is that I see about 7 prominent dust spots that disappear completely in the entry, and about another 7 that look practically identical in the entry and the original. All but that really big one look very similar in the original (same tone, luminance, etc.). I can't imagine what could kill off half of them and leave the rest essentially untouched.

Yes, that's one of the reasons I'm skeptical. The subtle spots are still visible, but the major ones disappear. A levels adjustment makes it more obvious-

If I may...

By copying the posted "original". I was able to remove the dust spot through this method:

Invert, Distort - Diffuse Glow (0, 4, 16), Edit - Fade Diffuse Glow (55%), Invert, Curves -to lighten the image a bit...

My 2¢

Mark are you talking about this shot?

Unfortunately the spot in that one was a bit too big, here's the original

Sorry couldn't resist ;)

I'm pretty sure Diffuse Glow isn't legal in basic. Oh, and you have some interesting stuff in that folder, Shannon!

What's "Distort - Diffuse Glow"? Sounds like a filter that wouldn't be legal in basic. ???

Dang...beat me to it! :-)

D'oh! Had no idea Diffuse Glow was not allowed in editing.

Um... nevermind then

Couldn't be reducing the file size? In reducing the number of pixels the super sharp small horizontal line could be discarded while a blurred and faint one could remain because the latter technically occupies a greater area?

The versions I posted were the same size.

Thought it might be good to post this link in here:

Saving Editing steps to a Text file

This site has instructions on how to get photoshop to save your editing history to a text file, or to the metadata on the photo itself. Whenever I have had to validate an image, I have referred to the text file for the history, and in some cases, I have simply cut an pasted the info from the text file.

Lutchenko, I wish you luck in getting reinstated. I know from my own editing that sometimes spots seem to disappear without spot editing.

it is possible to remove the dust through levels and curves, I just tried it. But I don't know how he got the exposure so bright, and was still able to remove the spot.

And there's the rub. I can remove the spots with levels and curves also, but it doesn't look much like his entry anymore. :)

Hey guys I am struggling to get what i got before.
I can remove the mark easily but cannot get it to what I had before.

All I can say is that I did not do a spot edit on it but if I can't demonstrate the method I guess I'm sunk.

I will continue to try and duplicte what I did but I'm not feeling very hopeful at the moment.

Thankyou to everyone for being supportive

Ok...

Open the RAW file in Capture NX
Exposure -83
Contrast 33
Saturation 5
And adjust curves manually

Save as a jpeg and the mark has gone and the remainder of the file is intact.
The remaining tiny marks disapear during normal PS processing

Does anyone know how to do the equivalent thing in Aperture?
06/18/2009 06:36:51 PM · #50
Taking the original as posted by Lutchenko

Exposure: offset -00098
Levels: 1.40
Crop
Resize for web
Smart sharpen

I then enlarged this up 200% and could not see any lint spots.

Edit Spelling
