When I first start using my camera (Canon 40D), the shutter occasionally makes a hollow, clunking, reverberating noise. It doesn't sound good. I assume that it's slowly dying. My question is this: do I send it in, only for them to say there's nothing wrong (since it doesn't happen all the time). Or do I wait until it dies completely? Then there's something to fix (but maybe worse off because of the wait).
?
Thanks! |

I think the phrase is" Damned if you do and damned if you don't". |

That's what I figured. I know with a car, the longer you wait, the worse (and much more expensive) it gets. I just know nothing about camera innards. If I'm damaging it a whole heck of a lot more by waiting, I might reconsider watching its slow death... (I love my poor little camera...)

| If its under warrenty, I would send it in and let them have a look, if the warrenty is over, I would wait till it won't work, canon repairs can put you in the poor house. If its an intermittent problem, and they don't find anything wrong it'll cost you anyways. |

This is very disappointing for me to read. I have been considering moving back to Canon recently and getting some L glass, although I did also consider the Nikon D300. There seems an increasing number of problems reported on here with Canon cameras, and not the cheapo models either. Perhaps this is an omen??
Unfortunately all my planned projects for this year have been put on hold, due to the death of my Father-in-Law and the relocation of my Mother-in-Law so she is closer to us. I have learned an awful lot about funerals and the arrangements, now I am dealing with house selling, sheltered accommodation etc.
But the Canon move still mulls over in the back of my mind. Do I stay with Pentax and the new K7D? Do I get Canon or Nikon? Do I need camera problems after investing a lot of money?
I feel for you and the problem with your 40D, when I bought my 300D years ago, the mirror assembly fell off in the first week!! It sounds like Canon still have quality issues and then there is the dreaded ERR99! |

I've been quite happy with Canon. I had a rebel that I had no problems with--loved it 'til I sold it. I did have a 20D that I hated. But I hated it from the beginning. I thought the focus was soft. I should have trusted my instincts and returned it--that was my stupidity. I've loved the 40D--would recommend it in an instant. I'm hoping it's a fluke. I know it's not--but 98.7% of the time it sounds fine. We'll see what happens. I prefer the rose colored glasses... |

Do you have it covered on your home owners insurance? If you do, problem solved.
Ooops, clumsy me, I dropped my camera. |
