For anyone who's ever needed (and in my case begged and pleaded for) this functionality, there is now a way to select LR images from an external file list.
Posted today on twitter (yeah, see, there is actually useful stuff on there!) ;)
@LR_Melissa RT @timothyarmes: New blog post: Finding images listed in a text file using LR/Transporter //bit.ly/iTeQw
If you're wondering why someone would be so excited about this, consider online galleries, where you receive a list of files a customer has ordered, etc. I get these lists all the time for my event shoots, and it's always a pain to rather painstakingly pick out one file at a time from the order list from LR... Now you can generate a selection list of files right in LR via the LR/Transporter plugin, build a collection from it (my personal preference -- point being you have the selection list; you can do anything you want with it!), and develop/export/upload to your heart's content!
(Timothy Armes is also the author of the well-known LR2/Mogrify plugin, if that name sounds familiar...)

I see your pain. I get teh same kind of lists and in XP it was easy...my LR and new editing box is Vista, and the Search function in Vista's explorer sucks for this purpose. My online sales company changed they way I get hte list from them so it's fixed.
I just convert hi-res jpgs and search on those files...i never considered doing it within LR but I can see the value in that (my workflow creates the JPGs so it's not extra work for me)
I'll check out your link there! Thanks!

Hi, Chris! That's a good point as well -- this plugin's usefulness is certainly workflow-dependent. In my case, I only initially export "display-only" (web-res) images, then only touch-up/process and export full-size images when someone orders them. I can directly upload to my site's order fulfillment lab via an LR plugin also, so for me, this feature is the final puzzle piece of the holy grail of reasonably-painless-and-as-automated-as-possible-order-completion. ;)
I hope you can find a use for it, too!
I'm releasing a couple of big theatre shoots later this week also, which I hope will generate some decent "list" orders -- I look forward to trying it out!
