I remember it being mentioned a while back, but can't seem to find the thread.

Seems to me I remember that someone was talking about how to save your history file, in case you ever were requested to show how you edited an entry.

Does anyone remember the thread, or better yet how to do it?

(I'm finally getting to the point where I do more than crop, brightness and contrast, send it in.)

Are you shooting in RAW?

I shoot raw + jpeg. Sometimes the jpeg looks "better" to me. Also, I'm not sure if the Raw saves the data needed, in the event I ever score high enough to have to submit the original.

In PS, Edit->Preferences->General tab->History Log

This is a quick workaround, but it does the job I think you're asking about - I delete the little .xmp file that gets created when you save the processed RAW file elsewhere. This restores the RAW file back to what you started with.
