I have owned an EOS 20D, 30D and now the 40D but have never shot in RAW mode. I noticed a lot of the photographers on here choose to shoot in RAW and then convert. Whats the benefit of doing that? Does it take more practice and skill to shoot in RAW. I have shot a few weddings for friends and wonder if it would make my pictures better. |

For me the two reason's are, adjustment of white balance, and the ability to adjust exposure....Hope that helps. |

Interesting question. I`m surprised it`s not come up before :)
I shoot jpeg 90% of the time for speed. I use raw mainly for my night shots and mixed lighting. |

I was amazed at the latitude that I gained by changing over to RAW...you can adjust your photos alot more by shooting in the RAW mode...take your camera outside...take some pictures in RAW then download them...you will see what we mean, the only downside to them is that they are rather large files... |

The question has been asked dozens of times in threads here. A search should give you many answers. Mostly though it is because in RAW, the camera doesn't process the photo and the image you get has the most information for you to work with when editing. A RAW image WILL require editing - it will not look like the .jpg the camera produces since the camera has processed it with whatever settings you have selected.
Set your camera to take a RAW and .jpg image at the same time and then look at the two and you will clearly see the difference. The RAW will look flat compared to the .jpg.
EDIT: here is one such thread
And here are others:
thread 2
thread 3
thread 4
thread 5
These are just a few and there are many more - some may have better info than others but all have info and opinions on the subject.
