My neighbor, whom never used a computer until I loaned her a laptop, is now an update freak. She's been asking me if she should go to IE 8. The laptop still has XP on it. Anyone here use that combination and does it create any problems? |

I updated and then un-installed it. It kept locking up.

I've been using IE 8 on my XP machine for the past three weeks without any trouble. |

I'm having major lock up problems with it too. At least 10 times a day. I can't figure out how to get back to the old version though since my whole recovery fiasco. It's driving me nuts! |

Maybe it's an IE8/Vista thing.

Go for Google Chrome instead, apparently it's the best most secure browser available.
I'm on a Mac and I love Safari (especially the new V4). Not sure how good it is on Windows though. |

I installed Google Chrome last week and I'm finding it very fast and lightweight. Some nice features too. |

I hate it! It freezes ALL the time. |

It has trouble with forms and integration with web apps, but it's not the worst thing IE has ever been. I'd still reccomend sticking with 7 if you do anything in a custom app, or consider one of the alternative browsers like firefox, chrome, or safari (Even on a PC) |

I thought they changed too much with IE 8 and not for the better in my opinion. I've had Chrome on my machine for a while but I liked the familiarity of IE. Now that's changed? Well, I'm going to explore my options. (I use Firefox extensively at work so that's probably going to be my browser of choice)

Had nothing but grief with IE8 in this XP box....I keep after it really well; don't have issues, but was thinking of moving to tabbed browsing.
I ran it for a week and just got thoroughly disgusted with the way it just kept locking up and giving error messages....went back to IE6.
I use IE6 both here and work on XP machines, and I just do not have problems.
Just FYI.....the Mother Ship corporation where I work will NOT allow it in the work computers. |

Yeah "Users" should stick with 6 or 7 ...
IE 8 beta 1 had issues, this last release (identical to what is in Win7) I have had no lockups nor compatibility issues...and doubt I will.

Yeah, really.....
I'm just one of those mouth-breathing droolers who doesn't feel he should need a software degree to run an OS in the box on the desk.
It's a tool and a convenience, not my life.
Funny though, after being a "user" for the better part of two decades, I've learned when you find something that really actually does work like it's supposed to, it's a terrific tool.
You whiz-kids just go ahead and have your fun repeatedly patching together the hot new stuff, and when you're done dinking around and fixing all the mistakes, THEN I'll use it.

8 sucks bad. the 64bit version sucks really bad. I am running 64bit Windows 7 as we speak, and Google Chrome is so much better than IE 8 it isn't even funny. How is it that Microsoft can release products time and time again that don't work with their own products as well as 3rd party solutions. I just don't get that.
Not to get this off topic, but Windows 7 is Vista put on a diet and re-packaged. I really think it is going to be a hard sell for Microsoft to get people especially businesses away from XP when Vista *cough* I mean 7 really doesn't offer anything that would be of enough advantage for a cooperation to spend millions on.

I've seen lots of postings on how Win7 is the answer to all our prayers, it's the second coming, etc. Perhaps MS has a staff of web posters just to spread the good word, the company line.
I use FF and not the most current one either - it won't play well with some of my online banking apps. I just got the notice bout IE8 this week and chose not to install it. I use IE with one website and that one only as FF won't play nice with it.

OEM deals that MS have in place with the likes of Dell and Compaq, and Enterprise licensing deals they have in place with the larger companies and government departments means that Win7 will sell, one way or the other.
The shrink-wrapped Win7 that you can pick off the shelf barely makes a dent in MS revenues. |

I've not tried IE8 under XP or Vista, but I do know it runs just fine under Win7. It seems strange that it crashes on some XP systems but not others. Perhaps video subsystem interactions? |

I'd suggest she try Firefox--much better, can add nifty plugins like adblocker and script blockers. I only use IE when necessary on my work computer, and use firefox otherwise on the work pc. Mac at home, so no IE crashes to worry about there :-) |

I just think that people will stop using it all together. Then they will stop using other MS products. But maybe you are right. Maybe OS doesn't matter.
I love google chrome for what it matters. Google Chrome runs better on W7 than IE8 does.
