I have been asked to take some shots of our office building, however the weather is awful right now so I thought I'd have a go at HDR.

I popped my camera on a tripod and took 6 or 7 images at various shutter speeds.

I then used Merge to HDR in PS CS4 but I ended up with a blown out sky, something I could achieve on my own thanks lol.
If I adjust the slider on the histogram until the sky gets to what I want I simply end up with the one of the original shots more or less.

In truth I get better results using the shots in manual overlay mode but still not what I want.

So does anyone have any good ideas or experience using HDR in CS4 or can anyone offer up some advice.

Many thanks
Will......

Is there no way to get this affect in a straight forward way in PS though?

Yes - but it requires more steps. This is a tutorial for those with CS2 and above.

HDR Tutorial

I guess I should have read the whole message you sent...lol!

Yeah, I found that out as well. This is the reason that Judi recommended PMatix. You can do HDR with individual layers, blend and adjust opacity etc, mask and erase etc to get similar effects to PM. But like I said, it takes more steps...but it can be rewarding. Photomatix and a few other similar "HDR" programs really simplify the operations and enable selective blending of the darks and brights. The HDR equivalent in CS really just blends each image and has minimal choices to play with.
