So therefore I suspect you were implying by your message that I was being an idiot, which is further expressed in your message further on, if this was not the case then fair play. |
Maybe I should clarify that I very much do differentiate between being an idiot, and acting like one....I believe that it's possible to show the signs without it being a way of life. Believe it or not, I assume that.

You are correct I do flout the law occassionally with regard to speeding, however if someone reported me for speeding or for not declaring an image sale then I would not think I was hard done by when the authorities came knocking, because I would accept my actions as wrong and in doing so accept the penalty. |
I dunno if it's my age and/or generation, but since the Vietnam War, the hippy generation, and just some life experience, I do see shades of grey......I most decidedly do see major diffetrences between driving 65 in a 55 zone, and rape, not declaring a sale of a $20 part from a car that I bought to make money from when I did declare the engine sale......and though I personally found it reprehensible that some people fled to Canada to avoid the draft, I understand the illegal war concept, and therefore wouldn't turn someone in who legitimately protested by leaving his country behind. Wouldn't want him watching my back, though.
Gotta go.....will be back later.
Can I think about the marriage offer?

Not wanting to drag this out any longer than it has already gone on ;)
I totally agree with you there are shades of grey, let's be fair Leo got a DQ from a challenge that was free to enter and had no prize involved, I didn't ask for him to be strung up outside the whitehouse and stoned for his crimes to society ;) The punishment was in line with the "crime" he hasn't got any scars to show for it and just like the 55 in a 65 zone where the punishment would be a slapped wrist or a small fine and the rape would *SHOULD* result in a VERY long jail sentence... My belief is if you do the crime be prepared to do the time (in a literal sense).
Just as a side note and this has nothing to do with the actual MM thread (or this one for that matter LOL), but maybe society is too quick to accept wrong doings for whatever reason, how many times do we hear of innocent people being beaten whilst onlookers walk by, how many times do we hear of the old man who answers his door being conned out of his life savings which is bad enough by itself but then beaten to near death seemingly for the attackers (read scumbags) own pleasure, maybe all this bad news desensitises us to other smaller things and stops us from bothering to stand up and being counted?
Anyway I'm not trying to preach to anyone LOL that's just the thoughts that came in to my head whilst reading your last post about shades of wrong :) |

Here's a really scary thought for ya......
Maybe we think more alike than initially thought by either of us........8>)
I really could never walk by something like what you're talking about above....it's said that it's smarter to not get involved, but I couldn't walk away.
I guess my thing about the shades of grey is that I do rationalize some things knowing full well that they're wrong from the strict sense, like speeding, but I also view it as part of the game. I have never gotten stopped for a traffic violation that I didn't deserve, but I've VERY rarely been tagged with what I should have been, and often been left off the hook entirely because of my total acceptance of the officer's determination.
But I'm very much down the straight and narrow about some of the most insignifigant things.....I *always* give back the money if a cashier makes an error in my favor, I pick up litter, and I don't cheat on my taxes.
I sure did smoke a LOT of pot in my day, though......8>) |

Yeah, look at the kind of antisocial behavior it engenders ...

So, is it just me or did this whole uproar spring from the fact that people missed that CEJ was decrying the very ethics of friend voting, regardless of rules?
K10DGuy touched on it briefly,
Originally posted by K10DGuy: I think you're making a mountain out of a molehill with very little actual data or evidence, personally.
As for whether or not popular voting ITSELF is right, or the winners deserving, or the prizes ill-gained (despite their worth), that's a completely different and separate ball-game. |
but it isn't a completely different ball-game, I think that's what the whole idea was in the first place.
(Correct me if I misinterpreted you, CEJ, and I will go back to lurking in the rant area) |

Ok, just found this thread, and I'm feeling the need to defend myself and others.
I recently posted a "help me get published" thread. My photo was selected as one of National Geographic's daily dozen.
1. There were no rules against it
2. couldn't help but realize that this was part of the process. People are going to tell friends and family. And friends and family will be excited and vote. Now, if everyone was jumping off a bridge, would I do it? Yes! If they were bungee jumping and having fun!
The biggest point I want to make is this:
When I posted this thread, I was incredibly excited about a, most likely, once in a lifetime opportunity. If I wanted to cheat, I would have pointed out the current leader (which was a sunset over the ocean shot) and asked people to vote it down. That would be cheating.
When someone asks for votes on this site, I don't vote for it if it's not any good. I also feel free to vote my conscience on everything else in the competition. And I assume that other people do the same. So I see no problem with this. Of course, if it is against the rules of that particular competition, then it is wrong. Otherwise, I see no problem with it.
