I shot some of my niece's softball pics from behind home plate through the fence. She plays 3rd base. The shots I took of her on third I have very light/blurred remnants of the fence.....but at home plate the fence prevails...

Should I not be zoomed in on the home plate shots so that the aperature can diminish the fence or just the opposite?

and the play of the game (not shot through the fence)

Courtney is a 9th grader, second year on the Varsity team......as a STARTER!! She is the First String 3rd baseman....earning that spot last year in 8th grade. The girls made it to the 3rd round of Sectional playoffs last year. And tonight is the 3rd round of Sectional playoffs for this year.....I'll be there cheering them on!! The Girls Varsity Softball Team made history making it to this point last year so we are hoping for a new school record tonight!!

I think I would have had my lens hood right on the fence. The closer you are to a distraction like that, the more the camera focuses beyond it. The fence may even have become clearer zoomed out, I'm guessing.

I took some shots at a zoo recently through a fence. Yes, I had the hood right against (touching) the chain, zoomed out to max, and you can't even tell there was anything there in the shots.

eta-hehe, I mean when I say you can't tell anything was there, I'm talking about the fence, not the subject! :-)
