| I've apparently slacked off on my sucking for the FS this month. No bells or whistles, but a decent score. And it was recently overtaken by my unusually good Unusual score. However, my past record still shows plenty of suck! |

Well I've been playing with post processing so have new stuff in my gardens portfolio if people want to take a look and comment. My free study is tanking along at the suckness I'm known for.

In doing some research into the word SUCK, Iâve discovered the following:
Definition
transitive verb1 a: to draw (as liquid) into the mouth through a suction force produced by movements of the lips and tongue b: to draw something from or consume by such movements c: to apply the mouth to in order to or as if to suck out a liquid 2 a: to draw by or as if by suction b: to take in and consume by or as if by suction intransitive verb1: to draw something in by or as if by exerting a suction force ;
Etymology:
Middle English suken, from Old English sūcan; akin to Old High German sūgan to suck, Latin sugere
Looking further, latin sugere means imbibe
So, this is what Iâve learned in a nutshell: If youâre on team suck, your photos draw people in and you frequently imbibe.
By the way, the Swedes obviously knew the value of sucking. When Electroluux first marketed their vacuum cleaners in the U.S., their slogan was, "Nothing sucks like an Electrolux!"
Lastly, my favorite SUCK quote âSuck up an albatross!â 10 points to whomever knows who said this (without the help of a search engine!)

Well.....I'm gonna go out on a limb and try this one....
I'm betting that it has something to do with the disastrous consequences of a bird IMBIBED by a jet engine.....I'll guess Chuck Yeager. |

Nah ... I seem to remember something with my buddy Opus with that quote but I could be TOTALLY in left field ... but it feels right ...

When "Wish for Wings that Work" was made into a very short-lived holiday special, Opus went to a support group and the Kiwi in the support group said "suck up an albatross!" (you see his wife had left him for an albatross, because the kiwi's wings were too small) |

Well, I shoot my first senior portraits tomorrow. I am so incredibly nervous. Its outdoors, so no stro bes. I don't even have a studio to use if I wanted to shoot indoors:(
Words of suckee advise would be awesome. |

Ambient lighting is a wonderful thing, if you get it to work for you. Look to see where the light's coming from, how strong/weak it is, and just do your best. They'll be able to see you don't have any strobes to help you.
Do you have a reflector of some sort? even just a piece of cardboard with really bright silver tape, like the kind they use to wrap around stovepipes, will work nicely to help bounce light where you need it. If it's slightly overcast you can get great diffusion, but if too grey, can make faces look flat. Too much sun and you get shadows. Watch that your subjects aren't squinting into the sun.
That's all I can think of for now. Go, snaffly, go! :-) |

A white sheet - I have a white umbrella and even one with a reflective silver underside (from 7-11, no less). If you can get close to a white wall or window that's reflecting... Let's hope you have sunlight, anyway.
Snaffles is right (surprise! - I think not). Ambient light is the bees knees. You may also have an advantage of relaxation and spontaneity in the basence of a lot of technical tackle. Best of luck. Not basence. Absence.

Listen to raish, he's got a couple good points there too. Lots of people find a studio to be very daunting - there is equipment to potentially trip over, and most people HATE flashes/strobes etc going off cause of the effect they have on your eyes afterwards. This makes many people find a single pose and freeze (though I have to admit none of the subjects in your recent studio shots seemed to have this problem!)
Outside, without an array of lights etc, people are going to be much more relaxed. Keep in mind that the light will change as you shoot due to earth's rotation and stuff like that :-) That means you have to be ready to adapt and move your subjects around. If you can scout the location, go and see where would be a good place to put people if the light is strong, or softer, and how the light is liable to hit them. If you have time take along a volunteer to act as a stand-in and run some test shots.
I like to watch America's Next Top Model because Tyra is both a former model and now photog, and she does a wonderful of showing how to have a model in place so the light is perfect for them - but encourages them to move around and not hold a static pose.
Most importantly, let the others drink the spiked punch, but not you, not til after the shoot! ;-) |

i have checked out our location for tonight and its really well set up. lots of different places and areas. il post pics tonight(or whenever i actually get to it, ugh) |

Seriously though, stupid fluffy stuff aside like the girls bitching about each other, in shows like ANTM they don't necessarily show a lot of the photog's setup (normally) but you do get to see what works - on both sides of the lens. Very useful esp if you're also a shameless exhibitionist like me, as Max and Ralph can attest to, and like to be in the shot too. |
