hellooooooooooo, DPC!
it's been too long! i do try to check in periodically, but haven't really had the luxury of time that i used to. at least, though, it's my good fortune that i'm still working full-time as a freelance photographer and that i have been able to stay incredibly busy in spite of everything else. my boat could sink tomorrow, but for right now i can still see the horizon and i'm paddling like a madman.
some of the stuff keeping me busy?
well, for until just recently, i had a weekly photo column in a local paper called "In Our Backyard". even though it was a casualty of the economy, i'm in the process of resurrecting online. no telling where it might wind up going. (the thumb links to the collection.)
in 77 issues, it managed to produce 9 press association award winners, which adds a little more incredulity as to why the publisher couldn't figure out how to keep it going. c'est la vie.
one cool thing is that one of the images that won was something i shot for a dpc challenge a couple years ago (the entry rules simply required that it not have been published anywhere in print previous to the competition period). and another winner was one that i actually shot for the first bubbles challenged, but decided not to enter. huh. talking about second-guessing yourself to death.
after shooting sports for randolph-macon college for three years, last summer the college approached me about doing a gallery exhibit. we (the athletic department & i) selected 20 images from a catalog of about 50,000 and processed them to make canvas prints. they are now permanently hanging in the yellow jacket club, and i gotta tell you, i still get a buzz going up there and seeing them on the walls.
i've managed to average shooting over 300 jobs a year, and having over 1200 images a year published. it is such a thrill to me to look back and see the interesting people i've met and photographed, the events i've been to, the places i've been. it's not that it's glamorous, exotic, or exciting, it's just that i'm working as a photographer.
hope all's well with all ya'll!
cheers,

It's great to hear a happy story in these difficult times. Be sure to set a little time aside for yourself so that you don't get burned out, but then, how could you burn out on shooting great images if you love it? Thanks for sharing your talent here over the last few years.

Hey Skip, I do wonder how you are doing from time to time. I'm glad to hear that things are going well. I am working in following in your footsteps somewhat and I am trying to make photography become a primary means of income for me too.
I've had a few successes lately also, although not quite the level yet that you have described. It is nice to get an update from you to keep hope alive.
edit to add: I just looked through your "In Our Backyard" series from start to finish. I really like the collages and how you put them together with the background image being a prominent part of the presentation and an anchor for the rest of the images. What a fantastic collection!

Nice work! Sorry to hear the mag thing folded. Btw, I left only a few comments, but I enjoyed looking at (nearly) the whole series. |

We do so much moaning in here that it's great to hear the successes as well. And of course it's always nice to have folks such as you keep us updated.
Congrats, and keep it up! :) |

Skip, that is a real fun collection of images(from your first link). I particularly liked the kids jumping into the water and the skateboarders. |

thanks for all your kind words!
i really do owe a lot of what i'm enjoying to dpc, from having a place to polish the technicals, learn photoshop, try out new ideas, practice failure, to just having a community that is almost as close as family.
having time to shoot for challenges is probably not in the cards, but i think i'm about at a place where i can start giving back again on the free advice side ;-) like this response to ken's request.
@mark: thanks! anytime people want to jump in the water, it's a photo op. when it's a freezing new years celebration, all the better ;-)
@shelia: thanks!
@citymars: thanks for the comments! oh, and it's worse than "folding"...the paper's still going, just without me.
@robert: dude, you might have followed me out of the gate, but it looks like you're miles ahead of me now ;-) seriously, i saw your large print thread. (btw, i got a guy that can go 55" wide and "almost" unlimited length. prices are probably reasonable, but the quality and customer support is EXCELLENT!)
@slippy: what is this "sleep" thing you speak of?
@SaraR: the funny thing is, that swimmer was unbelievable, named 4-time swimmer of the year in her conference. other parents want me to take that shot of their kids, but the wonder why it doesn't come out the same...
@deb: thanks!
@bear: heyah! cheers to you, one of the true anchors in this joint! if i wasn't having the a/c in the van fixed today, i'd probably be buying the topaz suite, thanks to you.
@waddy: you're dead on about setting some aside. i'm thinking of launching a new ad campaign: "Send deserving kids to college...mine! your buying my photos is an investment in our future." you know, one of the nice things about photography is that there is always something new to challenge you.
@Yo_Spiff: thanks!
@judi: i had a reporter tell me, "damn, skip, you can't expect to win an award every time you take a picture." of course, she's right, but that doesn't mean you don't try.
and yeah, looking at my 5.55 in the free study with 1 comment, i'm reminded as to how rare it is for my photography to fit into a dpc challenge ;-) |

Awwww, Skip, welcome back. Seriously, this place hasn't been the same without you
so I'm glad you're back for a while. I'm gonna go look at your pics, but just had to get this
welcome off first.
:-))
