Many many years ago, I used to back up my photos on CDs. Over the years a few of these CDs had become "unreadable" but I still held onto them cause they did not take up much space. I have lived through a couple of hard drive crashes and recovered most of my images from the CDs. I did not give much thought to the lost ones, its all water under the bridge so to speak.

Recently my hubby bought me a new DVD writer for a different project. Today just for giggles, I put one of the "unreadable" CDs into the drive. Lo and behold, I have recovered about 180 photos that I considered long gone. These are photos from my first and second digital cameras, some from as long ago as 2002.

I feel like a kid in a candy store. Sure they are mostly tiny little crappy images, but they are a piece of me. I may never travel to Fredericksburg VA or Cozumel again, so these images are mementos of my life.

I have no idea why I am sharing this info with you, but it feels wonderful and I wanted to share it with someone. Thanks for reading :-)

Hey Barbara, that's great news! Yes, hubby should get a hug :-) And I betcha that with the new filters and processing skilz you now have (hmmm, like TA??) you can do some cool things with those 'tiny little crappy images' :-)

It's great to hear some good news from you, after all the tough times that you have been having recently.
I did something similar lately, by discovering a big box of slides and prints from my film days. It does feel nice to be able to see them again and remember those good times.

I am discovering a few hidden gems in the collection. Most of these would have been rejects way back then.

You give me hope! I have some unreadable CDs that I've been holding onto for years "just in case".

Thanks for the post, Linda

Sometimes it helps to clean a CD that will not load. They make a kit for it.

Happy to hear that, BAMartin. Nothing beats the feeling of having an unexpected surprise.

Cheers!

Yep, we've tried this several times; unfortunately it has never worked. It seems like more of an "incompatability" issue than a damage issue. We'll keep trying everything though...thanks!

I was thrilled to find this couple hundred photos that I considered lost, but there was still one CD that my drive could not see. This collection was a medium sized chunk of the photos I took on my little trip to Iceland.

Hubby once again came to the rescue. Somehow he was able to save 294 of the 297 images on that CD. These are photos I have not seen in 6 years. Now off to do some processing.

The cleaning didn't work. : (
If you can remember and find the program that you made the CD's with on line, you may be able to use that to open the discs. Try a Google search for C D File Recovery Software. There are a lot of free ones out there.
