I recently joined the local photography club here in town. It took me forever to even find info about the club because they don't seem to know how to get out there and advertise to get new members. The president of the club has asked me to do some research into getting the group a website. Any advice on which way to go? They're not really going to want to spend much money. And someone has supposedly been working on a custom website forever with no results to show yet.
My initial thought was to start a group on Flickr. Members could join for free (they like free), they could be invited to the group and post photos there for display. Flickr is generic and easy to understand. The average age of the group seems to be about 60 and most people don't have much computer experience.
The president and I each use Smugmug, but that's not suitable for a group because you wouldn't want to hand out the password to the account to 40 people who could change credit card settings.
So besides Flickr, what would be some other good options? |

You might check out MyFamily.com -- they have features handy for any affinity group -- like being able to set it up to automatically a list of members when new content is posted. It is npt specifically photo-oriented, but they support photos, and I remember it as good for communications ...
It kind of depends whether you want something mainly to help your club function, or if you're trying to get your work seen by the larger world -- for that Flickr or pBase or SmugMug would probably be better. |

You could also setup a wordpress blog (either on your own domain somewhere or on something like blogger). Members can be given different levels of access (see the role scopper plug-in -> I just installed & configured this one recently and it's not bad). There are some plugins for images but I have not setup any so cannot comment but I know there are a few out there. There is a post notification plugin for notifying users of post via email and can do group emails based on criteria.

You really don't want (or maybe you do) to allow everyone to be able to change content.
However, it all depends on what image you want to project for the club.
Check out websites for clubs of similar size to see how others are doing it.
The club I belong to has this site: //www.imagesab.com . The club has been going for a number of years and currently has ~140 members.
Another local club (much smaller) has this site: //www.stalbertphotoclub.com/welcome.htm

I found my local club via meetup.com
It costs a little bit of money for the organizer, but it really is a very good solution for clubs. |

Thanks for the suggestions.
Colette, those are some nice well done sites.
And I can't believe that Meetup.com didn't come to mind earlier. I check that site fairly often. Unfortunately there's not a whole lot going on in my area.
