Way to much time spent on this, but it wasn't just for the image, it was for learning. That makes it worth the effort.

Decided to try and use Clean a little more to see if I like it. Since someone mentioned it was on sale right now, I figured I better make up my mind quick lol. I will say that I am happy with this edit and how I have more brightness and detail now.

It was so foggy when we got there! I didn't think I'd get any decent pictures. About 5 o'clock the fog finally lifted!

This was done with my favorite Topaz Filter Simplify Buzz. I love the paintery look it adds.

On the heels of dougi555 thanking you for influencing his ribbon, I'd like to blame y'all for introducing me to a dark side of myself that has come out with this Topaz stuff.......
I shot this yesterday, it was my first outing at a real model shoot....a friend of mine called me and asked if I wanted to join him. He has Bees, and I'd never shot with "Real" lighting before. I want my own Alien Bees now, thanks to the b*stard! LOL!!!
Back to the image......I'm fairly sure that this result is not what either my friend nor the model envisioned.....
I really like the dark, gritty tones of this rework through Topaz Adjust....this image in and of itself is enough to convince me that I'm going to buy it when the trial runs out.
I'm not sure what it is, but the whole raw, dark mood of this really strikes a chord with me......I've found that this grunge effects are very striking.
So like it or not, I've found a style that I seem to have something of an inclination towards, and I blame you guys! LOL!!!
I'm curious as to your thoughts.

Thoughts:
1. Took you long enough! The program's VERY responsive to the way you seem to like to work, so it's a natural for you.
2. You need to learn to mask out the halo areas and correct them, IMO: here's a quick-n-dirty example. Select for figure, invert selection, and use healing brush in multiply mode to paint darker sky in haloed areas around head and leaves.
Good work!

Thanks!
Actually, that was a five minute quick-n'-dirty edit just 'cause......
I can make it cleaner with care, but as to the repairs.....
I don't know how to do ANY of what you just said! LOL!!!

1. Use the quick-select tool to roughly select the figure, then invert the selection in the selection menu or by hitting cntrl-shift-i: now everything BUT the figure has been selected. This means that you can paint or clone right up to the edge of the selection, and nothing that is not WITHIN the selection (in this case the figure) will be affected.
2. Notice that in the right-hand panel I have deleted everything that is selected in the left-hand panel, so y\ou can see what the quick selection looks like.
3. Now use the healing brush tool, and select the mode as "multiply" in the tools panel along the top, then click a sampling point that's the darkness you want and paint over where the halos are; that's all it takes, they will be darkened as needed to match. If you do all this on a duplicate layer (recommended) then you can fade the opacity of that layer to mute the effect if required.

NiMBY (Not in My Backyard)
From a train ride into Tecate
Original ------------------ Edit
The exposure savior on this shot was Nik Viveza.
I ended up with ~30 Control Points darkening the background cars, lighting the foreground cars and darkening the foreground grass.
The details were brought back with a TA Detailed, TA Clarity and TA Photo_pop. High pass applied as last step. |

This is the Shiznit Jeb, most excellent job. I too enjoy the darker side of photography and find myself heading that direction. Nothing against the bright side but things just aren't as happy feeling as many convey in their photos...all one has to do is show up at work to figure that out. :)
This has feeling to it, great job...for me this one of your best...and you probably didn't have to work as hard composing the shot or in the post processing...you were out just out having fun for a side challenge (challenging yourself).

Spicify:
Smooth and flat, which I think is the better way to go on this image...
ETA: From your comments (thanks!) I am clearly in the minority in this preference !!
