I want to start using a reflector disc in my photography, but i feel absolutely clueless how to start. I would greatly appreciate and tips or advice that anyone might have.

I'd get a 5 in 1 set--can switch/reverse covers to get silver, white, gold, black, and has a translucent white element as well.

If you have a carbon-based, voice activated reflector stand (a person to hold it) then you have them adjust it to fill in harsh shadows--so they angle it to catch your main light and throw some on the shadowed area. If you don't have a person, then a reflector arm/stand works okay...

Gold will work best outdoors, or in certain warmer lighting (or warmer skin tone) situations. The white will give a soft, more diffuse, and not as bright reflection, and the silver will give a brighter, somewhat harder reflection. The black is good when you want to kill a reflection (subtract light) from one side.

The wescott 5 in 1 is not bad, the Paul Buff one is good, but there are lots of choices. Ebay can be a good source, and checking them out at a local camera store is another way to go.

don't go for the biggest ones either, they're usually more trouble than they're worth.

I bought a 41" 5-in-1 jobby that was too big to use and kept flapping around and catching wind and basically getting in the way. I swapped it for a dinner tray wrapped in silver foil and things are working good. If I need to soften it I can put tissue paper or something around it.

Total cost = $4

I would say to just get one and play with it.

If you have trouble folding it up, search for a youtube video. I had to.

Or, before you buy, take a sheet of white posterboard and experiment. It's not exactly like a reflector but will give you an idea of what you can do and how.
