I bought my first stack of DVD-R's the other night. I have no problem burning CD's, but I can't get my NEC (3550a) drive to record DVD-R's. I put the blank disk in there, close it, and a window pops up that gives me some options. I choose "Open a Writable Folder" (or some such) but when I try to drag files into the folder, I get an error message. It also shows the disk to be 100% full (actually 0 bytes of capacity).
I updated the firmware last night. And I can't find any software that the drive came with (should there be something?).
Any ideas?

Judging from what I see on this product page, it should have come with a copy of Nero. |

What computer, OS, etc?
Are you sure you have a compatible DVD format? See this article for an explanation of DVD formats. From what I can find online about your drive, it appears to support DVD+/-R, DVD+/-R (dual-layer), and DVD+/-RW (which is most formats, but would not include, for example DVD-RAM, etc.)

Windows can only burn CDs via drag/drop - you'll need real burning software to deal with DVDs. I highly recommend ImageBurn, which is completely free and pretty reliable.

I use NERO for burning DVDs which works very well.
What software are you using to try to burn the DVD? |

Roxio "Toast" works nicely with Mac. I think that they have a windows version too.

Thanks, everyone. I'm on Windows XP. Sorry, I meant to mention that.
I downloaded ImageBurn (thanks, Manic!) and I'm making some progress now. I guess my mistake was assuming that Windows would lead me in the right direction.
And maybe there is a copy of Nero floating around here. I'll keep looking... |

I did it!
Thank you all. Now I can move some files off my hard drive and download a week's worth of pictures from my camera. Does the cycle never end?

Windows version is EasyCD/DVD Creator (or close to that). Their stuff is often bundled with burners.
However, I'm having trouble with Toast 9 on a G5/OS 10.5 ... :-( |

Using ver. 10 on 10.5.7 - no problems, love it. |
