Hi All,

Need some advice about using studio strobes outside....

I will be shooting 9am - 12 pm on a sunny / cloudy day......how do I ensure I dont run the background dark or black?

cheers

Tony

Are you going to be using a meter?

If so measure the ambient and then meter the strobes accordingly, the more power you throw at the subject the darker the background will be if the subject is correctly exposed.

you could start by trying for strobe at 1 stop brighter than ambient--but that can be hard to do in full sun, and too much in open shade, so it will really be a try it and see sorta thing. You can adjust to "taste" :-) Sometimes a strong, obvious strobe outdoors makes for a dramatic image, sometimes a subtle application works best.

Thank goodness for digital and instant feedback, eh?

Don't forget to try ambient and reflectors only--sometimes that is sweet!

What I found that works for me is point your camera in the north sky and get your reading. Start at your sync speed 1/250 and get your fstop. At that time of day it should be around f16 or F11 depending on cloud cover. Kaeep your camera settings on those settings and adjust your lights to match the fstop.
Do this by adjusting power level on your strobes or the adjust the distance of your strobes to your subject.
If you want more ambient light adjust your shutter speed.

Hope this helps.
