At least she knows where the kind hearted talent is.
IMHO if you want that sort of editing help, you would be better off over at deviant since it is the sort of treatment that is much more often done over there, here you might see that sort of thing in portfolios or threads, but it can't be entered in challenges, and would not fare well in them if it was.

Really the only thing i can tell you LA, is just grab a picture and just start hitting buttons in photo shop. See what does what.
A year ago, I didn't even have photo shop and knew nothing about it. Then I got it, and I have to say I have improved beyond my dreams.
I read teh tutorials and just hit buttons till i knew what that button did |

I think what you are really looking for is an ATN.
IT is the quick and easy way of doing things without learning anything |

That has already been answered earlier in this thread by the use of Texture Overlays.

LA, I think you're trying to get there too fast with not enough software to do it, so its difficult to help you recreate a particular effect. Its a bit like giving you a cello for the first time ever then trying to teach you the Dvorak concerto, girl, lol!! I can recommend that you sign up for a local course in photoshop, get a student card if you don't already have one, and buy PS3 at the student price, which is incredibly low. Or see if you can borrow a copy from a friend - if you're not connected to the internet when you instal it you should be able to do it for free. Apparently :-)
Then, in order to speed up the process and make it easier for yourself, get hold of as many software plugins as you can - I'm thinking for what you're trying to do you can get hold of Totally Rad Actions, or possibly PhotoToolsPro. They both have heaps of actions on them that act like shortcuts, you press the button and the effects happen for you, then you can layer them on top of each other until you are happy with the result. Its not the ideal way to do it and it would be better for you to either do a course or study the tutorials on this site (yes, study, they're all there for you to learn from!), but at least if you're in such a hurry the photoshop plugin programs do make it very easy for you.
If you choose to go that way, take care to remember that each action that the plugins perform come up as a layer on top of your image, and you can increase or decrease the opacity on them so your images don't end up looking ridiculously overprocessed. Then when you have more confidence, fiddle with all the filters, effects, layer styles etc in photoshop itself - you'll eventually discover for yourself what to do. Write it down as you go so you don't get bamboozled.
It can take years to get a true grip on photoshop, its a massively powerful and complex program and I think most people here are a little frustrated because its impossible to impart technical details if you have very limited knowledge of what to do, and using an old version. You really have to spend a huge amount of time experimenting with it, or make it easier on yourself by doing a basic course so you can understand layers and effects then take your experiments from there.
I had PS7 before I upgraded to CS3, and I can tell you its unbelievably different, so many people here simply won't know what you have available to you in terms of filters and effects. Its a very basic version, so try to get that upgrade happening any way you can! Even download a 30 day trial and see the difference yourself.
There are also many Adobe and photography magazines that give you PS3 and PS4 tutorials on DVDs. Maybe grab hold of a few of the more basic ones that introduce you to the fundamentals of the program - much cheaper than a course and you can do it at your own pace, with stock images that come with the DVDs (I think...).
I'm still wondering if you're conducting a human society experiment or something, but giving you the benefit of the doubt because you've already entered one challenge and didn't do such a bad job of it either :-)
You remind me of my daughter - she wants the fast track approach to everything in her life too, lol. This is a slow steady learning curve, have a look at what everyone says - it really does take years, even when approached obsessively! :-) |
