//www.wolframalpha.com
this launched last night - seems like the internet just got a brain :)
they said they might have some server issues for the first few days after launch due to overload - and working the bugs out. but it looks to be a good supplement to google for searching for certain types of info.
it doesn't return lists of webpages that might have relevant info to your query - it returns the info... !!
there is a demo of it here

It has been on Lifehacker, a story on CNN.com front page this morning (but is dated 4 days ago), was shown on a TV show - Tech TV or something, along with a few others that are coming out (ones mentioned in the CNN article.)
After reading the CNN article I realized it is almost word for word the same article I read a few days ago somewhere else. Even the pics were the same.

Perhaps I forgot something...my point was about the copying of the article. It had nothing to do with soup. Speaking of which, my wife made this soup one time. I could not eat it. But then she made some soup that I could not eat enough of. Now, she makes a soup I don't know what to make of. Is it soup? Or should I use a fork? Any way, if you take the third left after Johnson's barn, then turn right at Old Man Jone's pond, you will find Wilma's Pie Shop about 2 miles down the road. She bakes a mighty fine pie.

As with many things I have found on the internet (maps, etc) this site doesn't know where St. John's Newfoundland is. I type in St. John's and choose city and it comes back with Saint John, New Brunswick. When I typed in the name of my hometown, it told me that Saint Johns, Newfoundland was a nearby city. No, St. John's is a nearby city, there is no Saint Johns Newfoundland.
FAIL! |

I found this interesting. The US budget deficit for PhY is estimated to be $1.841 Trillion. Look at the bottom to see what that number compares to. Interesting!!!

This guy's got an awesome PR machine ... in addition to the stuff already mentioned (CNN, WSJ, Lifehacker, TV), there was a full page article in the Economist this week about it.
I tried it. If there's a number in your question it'll probably get it. It even knew the speed of light in furlongs per fortnight ~ 1.8 Giga-Furlongs/Fortnight |

Hmm...I must say its correct:
What is the airspeed of an unladen swallow?
Result:
there is unfortunately insufficient data to estimate the velocity of an African swallow (even if you specified which of the 47 species of swallow found in Africa you meant)\n(asked of a general swallow (but not answered) in Monty Python\'s Holy Grail.) |

"How much wood could a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood?"
Result:
a woodchuck would chuck all the wood he could chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood
This started out promising:
"WHAT is your name?"
Result:
My name is Wolfram|Alpha.
"WHAT is your quest?"
Result:
Human Discourse - Additional functionality for this topic is under devel--AUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUGH!
(Okay, the screaming bit was in my imagination...)

too bad the name sucks...
If I were reffering to this site, I guess I'm supposed to say "wolfram it!" rather than "google it!"
that just doesn't sound right. |
