Why have the prices risen so sharply on lenses (and probably cameras, not watching) in the past few months? I bought a 17-40 for $650 in January, and now there $750, that's 15%... currently $699 after rebates - nice strategy, sounds like used car dealership tactics.
The exchange rate has the dollar gaining value over 5 months ago, so what's the deal? Or is it based on earlier exchange rate performance? If that's the case will they come down again?
And if not "market forces", it doesn't seem like a good tactic, as I assume more people will be spending less on luxuries these days.
Thoughts? |

I still want that lens, but I might have to win the lottery now!! It's weird how some of the pricing rises for no dang reason! They have given cameras across the board a bump in price of late, so why not lenses. They probably figure...if you're willing to buy equipment in this economy, what's the quibble over $50! :) My 2cents and nothing more.

Given that lenses are very expensive nowadays, maybe it's a good time to just make use of what we have and maximize it. I know a lot of people who buy lenses they don't really need and ended selling them at a loss.
Cheers!

| America is about the cheapest market. It's political. Stop whining. $1,118 is the roughly converted price from a good on line deal in Norway. |

We live in disinflationary times - so prices will continue to increase but at a slower rate than before. Also as you've pointed out the USD is net higher over the last 6 months against other currencies which should make lenses cheaper for lens importers in the US. However, i do know that camera and lens industry has ben suffering with low sales volume as lenses are very durable items that last for years (the rate of increase in lens sales volumes is slowing down sharply). Maybe lens makers know that raising prices wont affect sales volumes and would net boost revenues.

It's not that so much as the places like Circuit City tanking and sticking vendors like Canon & Nikon with huge bills that they cannot, and will not, pay.
We get to field those costs.
F*ckin' warehouse whores, I hate 'em!

Wow! Perhaps the increasing value of the dollar did do us some good...

Nobody's whining, I'm attempting to invoke rational discussion. Sorry it's more expensive in your country.

Interesting. I also read somewhere that Nikon and Canon have been doing poorly lately, and the durability of lenses is an interesting facet to that.
It's possible that raising prices won't affect sales - known in economics as an inelastic good - because those people who need lenses will pay whatever it costs... Though I'd tend to think that enthusiasts/hobbyists will probably consume less and buy used more often. |

You know, if americans spoke of other peoples' countries the way some folks the way they do of ours, there would be hell to pay. Personally, I'm pretty sick of it. |

With you there, Simbo. The empire on which the sun was never supposed to set (D'oh!) gets a lot of criticism and most of it's well placed. Still, I think just about every nation is peopled in the majority by parochially minded folk who will insist that their country is the best in the world. The less experience they have of other countries the more they insist.
All I said was that America is about the cheapest market. OK, a bit more... |
