With the recent spacewalk bringing Hubble into the news I got to thinking about downloading some hi-resolution files to print for the wall in Caden's room. Being eight, he's all about being an astronaut these days. Poking around the .gov site I don't see an obvious place to find large files. Has anybody found them and printed from them before?

Yeah, I'll find you the link(s) ...

I think I found it, now to wade through for the best...

Suggestions of people's favorites?

NPR has a little slideshow where astronomers pick their own favorite images and has audio where they explain why. A good link

How big are hubble pics anyway? Now that I think of the age of Hubble, I'm guessing they might be pretty small...

Just stumbled across this one: //www.spacetelescope.org

And here's the copyright info: //www.spacetelescope.org/copyright.html

And there's a variety of sizes/compression levels to meet your needs!

Some of them are huge, doc. I'm looking at one that's 200Mb in downloadable original. Some seem to be as small as 6Mb. A lot of them are stitched together, so they get really big.

R.

ETA, that's actually the large *JPEG* LOL. The original is downloadable, 500Mb. It's stitched together from 48 exposures. It's the Carina Nebula shot.

Thanks for the IOTD link -- NASA must have more photo galleries than ... notice how they actually facilitate downloading their images? Quite the refreshing change in attitude ... :-)

I am 38 and still all about being an astronaut (oh well one can dream).

I like the NASA IOTD, its great to see some of the old Apollo era images that are rarely, if ever, seen anywhere else. #115 is one of my favorites.

Here is the searchable archive of Hubble news items. There are a number of ways to limit what you are looking for. The news items always have links to the best quality downloads. SOme of the older ones you have to go to the "print" resolutions.
For the most stunning images, look for the ones that were made by the ACS (Advanced Camera for Surveys). They are simply stunning.
Give me a little while I'll post links to some of my all-time favs.

Edit to add a few:

//hubblesite.org/newscenter/archive/releases/2002/11/image/d/
//hubblesite.org/newscenter/archive/releases/2002/11/image/a/
//hubblesite.org/newscenter/archive/releases/2003/24/image/a/
//hubblesite.org/newscenter/archive/releases/2002/11/image/g/

And the mother of all galaxy images (warning, this is a 106.5 MB File, 11477x7965px!):
//hubblesite.org/newscenter/archive/releases/2005/12/image/a/warn/

And the Grand-pappy (74.1MB, 22620x15200px):
//hubblesite.org/newscenter/archive/releases/2007/19/image/a/warn/

Some Additional Images:
//hubblesite.org/newscenter/archive/releases/2004/32/image/d/warn/
//hubblesite.org/newscenter/archive/releases/2004/20/image/a/warn/
//hubblesite.org/newscenter/archive/releases/2004/07/image/a/warn/
//hubblesite.org/newscenter/archive/releases/2008/2008/24/image/a/warn/ (another huge one)
//hubblesite.org/newscenter/archive/releases/2007/2007/34/image/b/warn/results/50/

NASA has just released the latest pictures from the recently-repaired/upgraded Hubble Space Telescope -- better than ever.

Cool stuff indeed! It's great to see Hubble back to doing ground-breaking science, a task at which it has excelled.
