This was my first attempt at an HDR image in a challenge. I really thought I had a strong image but being a free study I knew I didn't have a shot at anything really high considering the amount of talent on this site. I do however think that my image was stronger than some that scored higher. Please critique my image. Let me know what could be done better.
Thanks

I didn't view the challenge during voting...seeing this shot for the first time. My first impression is that you titled it the same as the sign in the shot but failed to show the cafe itself. Perhaps drop the name of the cafe in the title and just call it 'A New Orleans Tradition' and it would speak for itself. So I guess it is the composition/title combination, IMO, that weakens the shot. Unless you have been there it doesn't give any sense of the place itself so nothing to really relate to. The processing looks good.

LOL, yeah, perhaps I should have said that :)
Also, do you like the shot. I've entered shots before that I loved and they have tanked but I didn't care so much as I really liked them |

IMNSHO the shot failed because of the shot, not the processing or any other contributing factor. There is so much in focus, so much going on, and so much competing for my eye that I find myself bouncing all around looking for a focal point and never finding one. Look at the leading lines, they never take me anywhere but to another point that leads me off to something else that leads to no where. Step back and look at the photo(without any reference to the title. I can't tell you what its of or what its trying to tell me.
Matt
Agree or disagree doesn't really matter. That is what I as an average viewer see and an honest opinion which usually goes over here like a lead balloon. |

Thanks for all the comments so far. They are all really appreciated. I really like this shot and nothing can change that but all the comments definitely will help me on future shots and see stiff that I obviously am not seeing. If anyone still had anything to add please do.
Thanks

I agree with MattO. I like the job that you did on the processing, but the picture doesn't do much for me. In my eyes, the primary focus of the picture is the green canopy, but I don't find that very interesting. At first, I wanted it zoomed out a little more. But the more I look at it, I want the canopy out of the picture, and I want more of the building. The rod iron work is wonderful, the flowers are wonderful, the building is incredible. I didn't vote on the free study this time around, but more of the building and the canopy less prominent would have been a truly incredible picture (in my mind) |
