I recently bought an 8gb CF card. When I connect the camera to the PC, Vista shows a capacity of just 5.99gb (6,442,450,943 bytes). Even if they count 8gb as 8,000,000,000 bytes, that translates to 7.45gb the way Vista counts. I know the file system will use some space, but 1.45gb? The file system is new to me, DCF.
A friend of mine has a Lexar 8gb card, and that shows 7.45gb, with fat32. Does any of you have 8gb cards with DCF on it? What size does it show? |

| Normally, CF cards are formatted FAT32. If you re-format the card in-camera, does it retain the DCF format, or flip over to FAT32, and if it converts to FAT32, how much is then reported? |

| It's DCF after formatting in camera, even when formatted from Vista (while still in the camera). I've just moved so my card reader is in a box somewhere... I'll try to reformat as fat32 once the card reader is found. |

| When using a card reader the card shows as being formatted with FAT32 and a 7.68GB capacity. So nothing wrong with the card! |

So what's happening, apparently, is that the camera interface is affecting the result. Not surprising, actually. I wouldn't stress too much about that, you have the capacity you expected to have. |
