I would really appreciate any comments on my Free Study entry. I can't say that I expected a top ten finish, but I did expect it to do better than it did. Thanks!

Now, see I should have done that to begin with, maybe I would have done better!

Anyhow, since I've gone ahead and messed up your thread, I should leave my comment about your photo.

In my experience, DPC voters prefer a simple, stockish-type, subject with focus and wow, they're not much for art, unless it's super-sharp and colourful. FS scores can be pretty low, and it's easy for an image to be lost in the hundreds of entries, so above 5 isn't too shabby, score-wise, I think.

But hey, scores are all about how well you please the voters, not so much about photography.

There's my deal, take from it what you please. :-)

Left comment... Hope it helps. If you have a chance a reciprocal comment would be appreciated. I too am curious why mine scored so poorly, though the comments are all positive.

Now that Slippy has eaten Humble Pie, I guess I should do the same for you.

It's an Urban Photo, it has the dark, grimy feel to it and I like this kind of shot. However, it is the voters here who determine your final placing and score, they have spoken:) A plus 5 score in a Free Study is pretty good, we all want higher scores but you can look back at it and dissect it.

Why didn't it score higher? It didn't have a visual impact? It is, as I said before, dark and grimy. Apart from splashes of red and blue, there is no other colour to lift it, hence the score settles at about the right level for voters.

I know you like it and I think it captures what you set out to achieve, and for what it is worth, I feel you got the composition just right. The colours work, the technicals are right. It has a place here and is appreciated by quite a few.

I hope you don't feel too disappointed and continue doing what you enjoy:))

Thanks to all for the comments. I am not complaining, but I am so new to this and am trying to learn and absorb all I can. It is hard when you only get 2 comments during voting. This is one of my favorite photos but you are right, it does not appeal to the masses.

I think I only got two comments during voting, and I have been certified as totally awesome. So you're in good company, because I rock. You heard it here first!
