Not to start my OS is better than your OS wars, but if you're a PC user, this is pretty cool.
Good until March 2010.

| I plan on installing the release candidate on one of my boxes at home. The ability to run a virtual PC within the Win7 desktop should give me the ability to recapture functionality between my preferred scanning program and my Canon Lide 600F scanner. Both work under Vista 64-bit, but won't talk because the scanning software can't communicate with the 64-bit vista drivers, and the 32-bit drivers can't be installed under Vista 64. Should be an interesting experiment. I will definitely be ghosting my boot drive first, though! |

| Kirbic, that's exactly the reason they put the functionality in there, to run a virtual XP environment. I'm putting win7 RC on my 2nd box sometime this week, hopefully tonight if I have time. It looks so very very good. |

Indeed it does. I've actually been pretty happy with Vista, happy enough that when I built a new box for my wife a few weeks ago, I loaded Vista 64 on it as well. Performance and stability is very good, and it runs fabulously on a relatively low-buck box ($530 including the hardware and the OS, but not including a monitor or case/power supply, which I already had. |

I've tried it couple of months ago,
Not sure will upgrade to 7. It looks like a Vista service pack upgrade, few options and that mainly it.
The Cons: Don't know where to start, compatibility issues with tons of software. Not to mention losing the ability to VPN to my work.
Maybe when service pack 1 is issued.

I'm also running vista home premium 64 on a new box I just built, and I'm happy with it. Though, it's a 2k+ box, I went all top notch on it. Vista boots up in about 20 seconds.
i7 920 cpu, 6g corsair ram, gtx295 video, 300g WD raptor HDD, 2x640g WD drives for storage and backup, and a blu-ray burner. Yeah some extravagance in here, but I felt like splurging. I finally have the hard drive configuration i've wanted, fast drive for booting and programs, one for data, and one for backups of everything. My old box is a pentium quad9300 with 4 gigs of ram, so we'll see how win7 runs on it. |

you might want to check your bios to be sure you'll be able to run the virtual machine aspect.
many intel chips don't support intel VT from what i read yesterday.
even some of the newest chips... i can't find the article i am reffering to - but this is a sum up.

I'd wait on BootCamp until they include driver support for Windows 7. I installed one of the betas on my MBP a bit ago and it sucked because none of my hardware worked.
That being said, the Windows 7 RC is seriously the best OS I've ever used. I love it. |

I've read of people having the vista 64 bit drivers work for Windows 7 on Boot Camp, I think I just need to look in the right places and there may be a tweak or two that I'll have to do to get it to work, but I know there are ways.

I've been running it since the first beta, My VPN which is a Checkpoint/FW-1 has and is working just peachy with the Vista Client (just got to know how to install it). I took my primary laptop at work is RC1 and I am way comfortable with it. No looking back...
Here's a hint: It's somewhere between Vista and Server 2008 as far as security... If an app installs fine but won't run...give yourself permissions on the c:\program files\[directory the app installed]
Win7 isn't even close to an SP for Vista... the code is tighter, footprint smaller and even chicken shiznit code written for XP runs faster in Win7. The skin is familiar to Vista but the even changed it more in RC1...very clean.

| From the moment of using Windows 7 a few months back it has blown my Vista 64 out of the water. It's a big leap for MS, and a positive change. |

I'm really anticipating giving it a go... I have it downloaded, just need to burn the ISO to DVD and install. I'm currently running Vista 64, and I'm debating whether to install seven separately and experiment with it in dual-boot mode, or to install as an upgrade. I've backed up my entire boot drive, so I could restore it in entirety if things go foul. I'm tempted to just install as upgrade and giver 'er hell. |

I always go for the clean install approach, something almost always gets screwed up when "upgrading" an earlier OS. I downloaded it, just need to burn and install on a clean HD and hope for the best :P |

Well, I'm typing this from a freshly upgraded (not clean install) Windows 7 Ultimate 64 machine. Virtual PC is installed and I'm downloading VirtualWindowsXP at the mo, so I should be up & running with that in the next half hour or so. Then it's on to configuring my scanning software to run in the virtual XP mode, and see if it can communicate with the scanner. The ultimate test.
So far, no hardware or software issues. Running like a champ. I'll probably have to eat those words at some point, LOL! Ah well, here's to life on the edge .
ETA: The install process took a little over an hour, and all of my apps, settings, even sidebar gadgets & shell extensions (e.g. ISO Recorder) were retained. Very seamless, and very little user interaction required during the process.

Wow, that's a pretty shining review. I wonder if I can upgrade from 32-bit Vista to 64-bit Windows 7... I've also hated the fact that it's wasting 1GB of my RAM.
My download finishes in 1 hour (nice work MS partnering with Akamai CDN to meet demand for this 3GB download!) Time to start imaging my OS drive... |

| I installed Win7 64 last night on my old box. It is LEAN AND MEAN. There's no garbage running you don't need, it's super responsive, and you get some freaky character wallpaper too. If you have it already you know exactly what I'm talking about. I'm going to give it a few weeks then I might put it on my main box it's so good. |
