How often do you change camera bodies -- as in, buy a new one? Just curious what the trend is.

Whenever I get jealous of everyone else's camera!

Actually I think I had the XTI for about 3 years before I changed it out, it had to do with sharpness and the fact that it seemed to get slower as it aged.

I'm thinking about upgrading mine. Its got about 50k clicks on it. According to this site the likely hood of failure starts increasing quite a bit around that mark. Next body? Well that's debatable. D300 or a D700. Tough decision...

I'd skip a model or 2 before upgrading. Ready to upgrade possibly on the next model, now that I have completed my wishlist of lenses, mostly bought with stock photo money I must add.

I am what... 3 body versions down (30D-40D-50D) and counting....

Would I like a 5DII - you bet. Can I afford it - Nope. Would it let me take better pictures - Nope.

sorry to drag this from the topic briefly, but citadel, buy the D700! It quite simply outstrips the D300 in terms of picture quality and low light handling. I've been shooting at ISO 6000 with outstanding results. My D300 is going on the market as soon as I can raise enough money for the second D700 body - I hate using the old one now!

Re your question bvy, the trouble with digital cameras seems to be not so much that we wear them out, but that they're improving the technology so quickly (in order to catch up with film cameras in many respects) that we all want to jump to the next level when it comes to resolution or light handling. So if you are looking at buying something, make sure its the best and most recent model affordable, otherwise you'll be like many of us who get stuck with outdated equipment and wishing you'd reached a little higher. I can't help with the life of a digital camera, I've only been digital for 2 years now, and have upgraded 3 times in that length of time, lol.

Now that I earn a living from photography I upgrade to a new body when it is released if it offers something that the old one doesn't. I feel the 5d mark II is a considerable upgrade from the 5D. Before that I had the 1Ds, and before that a 10D. I had the 5D for quite a while and was tempted a bit with the 1Ds Mark II but held out for the 5D mark II.

BUT, I think one is smarter to spend money on lenses. I have kept the same lenses since the 10D. They are a much better investment. If it was a question of upgrading to the new body or buying a new L lens, I would go with the lens.

I usually tend to buy a new body just as its about to drop in price - so if you are looking to get the newest and greatest - keep an eye on when I buy it then wait no more than 2 weeks as the price is sure to drop at least 25% by then.. FFS.

I'm getting ready to upgrade from my D70s to a D300.

The D700 makes no sense for me. It's twice as much money as the D300, and for what I want and need, the D700 is wasted on me. The D300 is the next natural progression because the reasons for my upgrade have to do with the limitatiomns of the D70s, ALL of which are addressed by the D300. I'm also not particularly interested at this point in making the transition to full frame. I love my 18-200 just the way it is with my crop sensor.

It's also moving up an entire class in camera body construction and intent from the D70s, and I will be quite happy with it. I was playing with a friend of mine's D300 about two weeks ago after a camera club meeting, and I was most impressed with how easy it was for me to acclimate myself to it simply because it's intuitive if you're familiar with the D70s.

Craig, get the D700 if you have to have the biggest and baddest, but if you simply want a new body that will serve you well and be worlds better that what you have now and will be familiar, get the D300......and spend what you save on new glass.

Yes, but all of your reasoning is pretty much subjective. There is a whole 'nother school of thought in that people research carefully what their needs are and choose in such a manner that for their needs, it's quite reasonable for a camera body to last them three years.

I'm constantly receiving compliments relative to the quality of my images and the old "You must have a jillion megapixel camera!" saw when what I've been doing is learning the craft relative to the equipment I have. There's really nothing wrong with my D70s, and it takes great pictures relative to its capabilities, and it's only recently that I want more than it can give.

For me, it's wasteful not to utilize a piece of equipment for its abilities and useful lifespan, so updating every six months isn't of much interest to me. I also am not willing to turn my life inside out to attempt to go into photography full time because I have more interest in photography than I do in running a business.....been there, done that, in a world much more conducive to my talents within a much narrower niche, and it was a PITA as far as I'm concerned.

So upgrade based on YOUR needs, for YOUR tastes, choose carefully, DO go where you truly want to or you'll regret any compromise you make, and get to know your new body well so that when you do upgrade again, you'll feel that the previous body served you well.....again.

Whenever she-who-must-be-obeyed says I can!

With that in mind I am about to change up to either a D90 or D300 from my beloved D50:)
