To my huge delight, we get to spend 3 weeks in Germany this summer.

On the way from Munich back home, we arrive in Amsterdam on the 10th August at 10:15 pm, then have to wait for 12 1/2 hours for the connecting flight!!!

What can we do with 12.5 night time hours?
How far is the airport from the city?
Is it even safe to contemplate walking around at night (we also have our 15 year old daughter with us)?

There are areas that are definately not suitable for your daughter and that is 24 hours a day not just at night. Avoid the Red Light District and you should have a nice time. I am not sure about the Airport we rode to our hotel in a van that made about a half dozen stops zig zagging all over the place on the way. I was lost after 10 minutes. Remained that way until we got back on the plane.

ETA: I didn't read through the entire thread but it might have some helpful info for you.

Yes, a 15 year old has no idea what sex is, prostitutes are, or a red light district is. I'm sure she would be asking "Mommy, what's that?" Or worse, it would cause her to become promiscuous. Give me a break.

I'm not sure that anyone wants to see a red light district, but a 15 year old is not a sheltered innocent little child.

Now, now, children, let's not argue.
I have no problems with sex or prostitution, but that doesn't mean I'll want to spend my time looking at THEM, daughter or no daughter.

I'm hoping for some other suggestions, preferably something where we can expect to be reasonably safe - I'm sorry, but the thought of Amsterdam in the middle of the night just worries me a little (mostly due to my total ignorance of the place).

It's about 20 minutes by train from the airport to the city, but, apart from the normal nightlife in a city, there's not much to do at that time.

Amsterdam is one of the safest cities I’ve been to. I was there all by myself and I felt safe even during the night carrying a camera and a decently sized tripod. It was late June. There were lots of people in the streets all the time, tourists and locals. If you are arriving at 10:15pm, you won’t be in the city before 11pm or so. Honestly, I don’t think there will be a lot to see, considering you’ll be arriving on a Monday, but you may want to take a walk around the main channels or pay a quick visit to the Red Light District. It’s perfectly safe – there are cctv cameras all over the place and policeman patrol the area. Dutch kids are used to it, as far as I could understand. When I was in Amsterdam, I was amazed to realize that on a Saturday at midnight, Central Station is crazy-busy like in rush-hour. Probably your Monday won’t be the same, but you have an idea that there are plenty of people in the streets.

hajeka and halopes, thank you for your input!

I think we'll hop on a train and go for a bit of a walk around. Surely anything is more interesting than sitting in the airport all night long.

well, Schipol is a pretty awesome airport; you could easily be entertained there for 12 hours.

make sure you get back in plenty of time. every time I've been there I've had to go through security twice; once to get into the boarding area and once again at the gate.

My experience is: this is an understatement :( Take more time for it...

In January 2004 I had a similar layover in Amsterdam. I took the train from the Airport into the city and spend about 9 hours taking photos with my old Minolta P&S. I had enough time to take a Bus tour and a canal Boat tour. I agree that Amsterdam felt very safe and the people were wonderful.

I posted some photos here:

You may also get a taxi to the city. The price was about the same with the two train tickets, 4 years ago! I am sure you ll have fun and its safe(!) except from the bicycles that move pretty quickly all the time even the nights! ;)
