I'm going to Vegas for a bachelor party in 2 weeks, was hoping to take a day off from partying and get some photography in. Can anyone recommend some cool stuff to do in and around Las Vegas? I wouldn't be opposed to renting a car and climbing a mountain somewhere, do those exist over there?
Help me out!! Thanks in advance.
PS I'm also thinking about sky diving, hiyooo |

If you are willing to take a full day and do a good amount of driving, by far the best thing to do is go to Grand Canyon National Park.
Edited for spelling and to add link.

Really? Hoover Dam? That's fun for photography?
I would love to go to the Grand Canyon but I don't know if i will be able to swing it. Red Rock Canyon seems more likely, might have the save the grand canyon for another trip.
Thanks for the tips guys! |

Actually, it is... really! It will be even better once the new bypass is built; there's supposed to be provision for photography from the bridge.
The dam itself is a great photo opportunity, and the tour is another opportunity. For the tour, you need a fast lens, it's dim down inside the dam.
ETA: Here are a few shots from a trip I made out there in 2008.

Cool thanks for the link! I think I'm more interested in nature-type opportunities, can anyone post anything cool from Red Rock Canyon or other places? |

My recommendation isn't what you really asked for, it relates to a different sort of shooting, but is something you can only do in Vegas. The gun store is one of those unique institutions, a true one off. I'm not a gun nut, but the chance to fire almost any weapon you have ever heard of is not something I have ever seen anywhere else. Try the Desert Eagle, the most ridiculous weapon I have ever fired. It makes a 44 magnum feel like an air pistol.
If you can break away for 2-3 days, the grand canyon and antelope slot canyons are amazing. Half a day and the hoover dam and lake powell are pretty cool, but not in the same league. If you like that breaking west along old route 66 is good for a day as well. |

a friend of mine has a desert eagle. he actually took down a deer with it a few years back. it was a face shot and did some serious damage. wicked weapon.
ref the original post. a few shots of the dancing girls around Vegas might give DPC a shot in the arm. :)

Red Rock Canyon and Hoover Dam are both worth the short trip, IMO.
Have fun! |

Try an ATV trip that runs out of Vegas. I took my camera along when I did it and really enjoyed myself. Also take your camera to the Bellagio for the Chihuly exhibit (glass blower that makes HUGE pieces). |

I was in Las Vegas for a week in 2007 by myself. I spent a great day at Red Rock Canyon with my camera. You can go to my blog to see the images of the canyon that I took in Febuary 2007. Another great spot for photography is in the courtyard of the Bellagio. They have changing floral exhibits there and the lighting is pretty good.

hey guys,
I appreciate your tips so far... so, after a night of hell-raising, i'm checking out of the hotel and should be ready to head out in my rental car by noon...
I have the entire day to go drive somewhere, was thinking Red Rock Canyon as a last resort (maybe hike a mountain) or better yet something more exotic like Death Valley or Zion National Park? Anybody have any thoughts on either or photos to share?
thanks again |

Webshots link, I hope
There are some shots from Zion, Bryce, Grand Canyon, Red Rock Canyon, etc. on here. Hope they help.
The best tip I had was go for the sunset/sunrise times to get the magnificent colors. |
