LOL! Probably not. I only have about six more months to retirement from the military and that wee pot o' gold at the end of that rainbow. Pretty sure the brownies are somewhat incompatible with that particular goal. :-) |

LOL -- I saw Juliet's post and my very first thought was "not worth risking the pension." ;-) |

Now this sounds like a good idea - I'm going to have to wait until after my university finals methinks or studying is going to be pushed even further down my list of priorities. It's currently sitting third behind DPC and eating Maryland biscuits dipped in tea! |

4th of May at 20.00 sharp there will be 2min silence in Holland. And a memorial service with the queen attending on the Dam square. They remember those who died during the 2nd worldwar.
5th of May will have some liberation festivities to celebrate that we were liberated from "tze zjermans".
Maybe I have some time, but I am not sure. I have no holiday.

Hi Melethia,
Quite a co-incidence you coming to Amsterdam soon for a photo shoot. I live about 100 kilometres from Amsterdam and went for a shoot there on the 4th of April to get a shot for my postcard challenge. ( See my portfolio for the shots I took that day)
I would have loved to meet up with you but am unfortunately not able to get to get to Amsterdam in the near future for various reasons.
I wish you a pleasant and productive shoot though. |

Hey Greetmir - I was going to PM you if you didn't see this thread - really do hope you and your wife can make it! I'll send you my phone number by PM after I figure out what it is. And I probably should buy minutes for it, too. I'm thinking Monday might be good for Keukenhof - at least that's my plan at the moment. And yes, Sander, I know it's a tourist thing - but I'm a tourist. :-)
I'll be staying in the Garden Tulip Amsterdam-Centre (found a really good rate) from Sunday until I leave on Wednesday. Still have to find a place for Saturday night - I'll work on that tomorrow. I arrive Saturday afternoon, so Sander, if you have time on Saturday, let me know! And appreciate the head's up on the memorials and festivities. Maybe we can meet Monday night?
Sangiro, your postcard entry is lovely! I hope to get a few half that good. Sorry you can't make it, though. |

You mean the GOLDEN Tulip Amsterdam - Center, right?

Heh - yes I do. Golden, not Garden. Not sure what in my addled brain caused that one. Hate getting old! And just found a place out by the airport for Saturday night, so I'm all set for getting there and a place to stay. Next up - places to visit and how to get around while I'm there!

Well ... now my wife is torn between Sat/Sun and Mon/Tues.
Will advise ASAP ... She has been SO busy all day with family ... first with one sister then the other and no time to even discuss it between ourselves ...
You bad girl dropped it in our lap with not TOO many hours notice ...
We will be in touch ASAP ...
I think our decisions will be made around 10 11 pm our time today ... so should be in plenty of time.
We wanna look at the whole picture then at accomodations ... but ... my wife is REALLY yawning about the tulips as others have too! LOL ... Me ... I am pretty open. But I will prolly look for a small brownie or two.
ETA ... a Standard Room there (at the Golden Tulip) which is the cheapest still available ... is 104 Euros per night for two persons which is not OUTRAGEOUS so we may stay there too ... stay tuned ...
later ...

I can do the tulips on my own - that's not a problem. I realize that those of you who live in the region probably do find it quite dull, but hey, I gotta go! I'm a tourist! :-)
Sorry about the short notice, too - I've got vacation time I need to take and I'm fitting it in where I can! Plenty of time to work out the when and where. Looking forward to it! |

Email sent, Greetmir.
Anyone else going to be in Amsterdam this weekend or the beginning of next week? |

I never plan to go to Amsterdam (it's just around the corner). Mon/Tue: in Amsterdam, but at work :( If you need a driver in the weekend, just give me a call. I'll use the car (instead of my bike). No plans for me this weekend, except on the very, very early Saturday morning. |

No driver needed, but would love advice/info on using the available transportation! Also would love to just meet for coffee or some such. (Actual coffee, not a "coffee shop".) I should have access to the internet when I get there (Saturday afternoon) and will be wandering about somewhere.... Just not sure where yet. Sunday morning I'm doing the tulip thing since apparently it's a tourist deal and those local to the area don't find it entertaining - I can understand that. But by afternoon I should have had my fill of tulips, I'm guessing. I'm open to suggestions! |

As on most airports (I think): Take the train to the center. Trams are the easiest public transport in Amsterdam (Free roads!). You need a "strippenkaart" or a day card. No idea what you can do after the tulips yet. Nothing I suppose :) Have a nice time and keep in touch. I can be anywhere in the center within an hour.

A coworker's husband is from Belgium and goes there often. I just asked him a place to see many tulips. He suggested Keukenhof, try Keukenhof |

Yep, that's the place I'm going. I'm not sure I'll bother to take pics - a coworker of mine and her hubby went last weekend and the pics she brought back are gorgeous!! I can just steal hers... :-) |

If you like photography :) go to see the exhibition of Richard Avedon, Foam. There's also the World Press 2009 exhibition in the "Oude kerk" |

The photo museum is on my list of "must see" items. And Oude kerk as well, though I did not know there was a press exhibition there at the time.
Is Harlaam worth a trip? I may head out there on Saturday after I arrive. It's that or a canal tour... |

I grew up in Haarlem. If you like old cities and/or shopping, it's sure worth a visit.

Well Melethia (Deb) is already on her way or in Amsterdam. My wife and myself will join her at her hotel on Monday.
We will be meeting in the lobby of the Golden Tulip - Amsterdam Centre at 2pm (1400) on Monday.
If you can make it there ... but a bit late ... ask to contact Deb Fort or Fiona Wolff (my wife) at the hotel.
It would be nice to meet as many DPCers as possible.
