canon 400mm f/5.6 L availability

Does anyone know of any reason why the canon 400mm f/5.6 L would be unavailable right now? I have an order in with amazon, but they have not found it yet. I have also checked out Adorama, B&H, 47th Street photo amongst others and they all are unavailable or back ordered.

Been a lot of first-time FF buyers for the 5DII, and this lens is pretty necessary for them if they want reach. Maybe Canon underestimated the demand and did not build enough of them? It's a theory :-)

There are alot of Canon lens that are not in stock, and those that do have them have upped the price to make extra profit. Have to love the supply and demand market huh? I've been waiting on a 50F1.4 to come into stock at B&H for quite a while for an upcoming job. Guess I'll have to do with a zoom rather then a prime. I'd say weak overall economy has caused a drop in production.

Current amazon price: $1,235.63
B&H: $1,119.95
Adorama: $1,199.95
47th street photo: $1,199.95

Maybe the lower prices are why these places are sold out?

The prices on that link are in CANADIAN dollars ;) keep that in mind if you are in the US lol

According to x-rates.com that lens should be around $1,217.20/US

I realized after i posted that that it was probably Canadian dollars lol.

I'm gonna hope that amazon comes through for me, I was watching the price and waited until they dropped it to buy it. I also like their 30 day return policy.

Wow, I had no idea that this lens was so scarce currently. I feel lucky to have bought one from a DPCer earlier this year.

I was looking through old threads earlier and I saw that you got yours a few months ago. At that time I went with my Sigma 150-500. It is not a bad lens but I have since realized that for what I want to use it for I should have bought the 400mm in the first place. I'm jealous!

scottieham Ive looked at other favorite places in Canada and it even seems to be a rarity here as well. Come to think of it the Canon 17-40 F4L seems to be in the same boat as well, no stock anywhere...
