Which camera is a worthy successor of Nikon D70s?
And at about the same price?

Thanks. In what respect, it is better than D70.
How much does it cost?
Has D70s been discontinued by Nikon? |

Yes, the D70s was discontinued a long while ago.
The D90 provides so many features, you should go and read up on it.
Some of the major advantages are
- the 12mp CMOS censor, with much improved ISO performance.
- Movie mode
- Live View
- Better battery life
- In camera retouching

My movement went from the d70s to the d300, but its a lot of dough to throw out if you don't have to. |

I'm going to be replacing my D70s with a D300. It's about the same size and weight and has the features and capabilities that I want that I don't have with the D70s.
I am basically making demands on my D70s that it can't handle but the D300 doeas with aplomb.
It just seems a natural progression to me.
The D90 just doesn't fit my bill though the folks that have them speak very highly of them.
The cost is definitely more, but the D300 is a very robust body, and I definitely want that.

Whuch cameras are the "Canon" equivalents of D90 and D300? |

I'm no Canon expert (or any kind of expert at all), but I would think the Canon XSi is similar to Nikon D90, and perhaps the Canon 50D is similar to Nikon D300. You're gonna have to do your own research on that though... |

D300 is concidered the "next step" from mid-range models like the D70, D80 etc. But you would probably find a D90 pleasing! Unless you can wait a few months and save some more money to see what Nikon is planning to release. Something is bound to happen soon since the D300 has been out quite some time now, even discounted some places I think. |

If they came out with an upgrade to the D300 that had the high ISO capabilities of the D700 and D3...yowza.

Been following up on that rumor for a while. Don't know for sure, but something is up. POINT IS! It might be worth while waiting a month or two. Save up some more money and see. If you don't want to use that much, then go for the D90 TODAY! Or have you concidered the D5000? Is an entry level DSLR, but shares many of the same features as the D90; 12,3 MP and Video are some. Or if you want to go Canon (I wouldn't do that if I were you, since Canon makes bad slr's, ehem...), I think the equivalents are:
D300 - 50D, but have in mind that there "might" be a Nikon counter attack on the 50D soon.
D90 - I don't think there are any specific Canon models to match this in the mid-range, but there's a new 500D coming out soon that's supposed to be quite "pro".
D5000 - Very cheap concidering the features, closest equivalent must be the 500D.
Other older models to check out is the Nikon D80, tremendously good camera sold at a very cheap price now! My GF has it, and I almost emvy her even though I have the D300. Or you can check out the Canon 40D, semi-pro that can be bought quite cheap now. Personally, I found the buttons misplaced and hard to operate.
Anyway, writing to much now. If you have invested in Nikon lenses and liked the D70s, stick with Nikon. If not, it all comes down to which camera that feels best in your hand. The one you feel is best to hold and use, that's your best choise. So take your money, rush down to the store and try them.

Unfortunately for digital photographers, this won't happen. The high ISO performance is a reflection of the pixel density, and thus will not be had unless the "D400" converts to FX, which would pretty much defeat the purpose of a D700 which is a strong contender in the market. Rumors are just that though... people who have far too much time to think about things that aren't really going to come to fruition. What an amusing job title. |

(I don't know, how to put a 'TICK' mark in forum threads. LOL).
Is it correct that Canon makes bad SLRs (as compared to Nikon)?

No! Canon don't make bad SLR's.....!!!! There are Canon users and Nikon users and all the other brand users. I see too many people using SLR's on Automatic....damn expensive Point and Shoot if you ask me. I own both Nikon and Canon and IMO Canon systems far outweighs Nikon. But each to his own.

Canon makes different SLRs. They each have their features. It really depends on what features work with your style of photography and your needs.
//www.DPReview.com is another good site for comparisons btw.

Most of my favorite photographers use Canon D30, D40 or Canon EOS 5D. |

That's absolutely correct Judi. Canon and Nikon cameras are both on an absolutely level footing.
However, owing to a set of ancient and ossified corporate rituals, the origins of which are lost in the mists of time, Canon sacrifices 32000 bunnies and 1 orangutan for every thousand dslrs it makes.
I hope you can live with that. |

I had D70 which worked very well for years. Someone else is now using it on DPC.
I have the D90. The thing that jumps right out is that it seems to meter better. When I use shutter priority, I seem to get less "blown" highlights when compared to the D70.
Also the 12MP. Seems that I can crop FOREVER with little loss of quality.
Bigger preview screen is nice to have.
However, be aware that the D90 is NOT a video camera. While the video mode is GREAT for catching something unexpected that you want on video, IMO it is not good for videoing an entire play at the kids school! Works well for taking 2 - 3 minute clips at birthday parties...etc... The video does come out HD and excellent quality though.

I'm very sorry!!! I didn't actually mean that Canon makes bad SLR's, I tried a joke, but didn't explain that very well. SO SORRY!!! Canon makes EXCELLENT SLR's, and if you want one and you like one, GO FOR IT!!!! Just remember that the money you are willing to invest and whatever camera that feels good in your hand is the only way to decide, regardless if it's Canon, Nikon, Pentax, Olympus, etc.
Once again, sorry for my poorly explained JOKE!!! Even though Nikon make better SLR's than Canon, hahaha ;) |

I will say Nikon D90 is an excellent digital SLR, much better than D70.i have owned D70 for four years and now upgraded to this D90 for the bigger screen. I got a lot more than just the screen. Smaller package and more features.
I LOVE this camera!
