I noticed this a week or so ago and decided to track it on the two profiles that caught my attention. The flag counters a lot of people have on their profile page, how accurate are they? Seriously...

I like the idea for a few reasons, but last week I noticed two profiles that had them. The first profile was from a person who had recently joined. Their Profile Views as counted by DPC were 946. Yet, the flag counter said they had 1435 views. The second the person had about 1500 profile views as counted by DPC but 2900 as counted by the flag counter. So I decided to wait at least one complete cycle - Monday to Monday to see if the count made by DPC updated to match. Well, no, it didn't. The first profile has 1084 via DPC but 1855 via flag counter. The second shows 1515 via DPC but 2982 via flag counter.

So which is correct? How can you have more views via flag counter than DPC? I mean unless you put the flag counter on your profile page the same time you sign up, how can it be even close to the same number let alone greater than the DPC number?

And on the reverse of this, I noticed the one on my own profile shows LESS than the number of views DPC says I have had in the time period since I put it there.

Very interesting. I have no clue what might cause this --- but look forward to what others will suggest.

Maybe the flag counter logs you every time you view your own profile? I know DPC doesn't... Who knows how many other such "discrepancies" there are?

It does log your own views if you've cleared your cache between visits, but not otherwise. We tested that when we first started playing with them. I dunno how accurate they are but I'm having fun with mine :)

Just viewed another profile with the same thing - 1000+ more views per flag counter than via DPC account.

I'm quite sure it counts each unique log-on from the individual who has the counter. I know this because I have a lot from Germany and I'm very sure those are me and not "visitors". Equally sure most the US ones are me as well because the work link is actually a US ISP. So other than one's own country, the numbers may be accurate, but the total visits includes one's self.

Dialup would count each time because the IP would change.

Okay, it IS counting each of my visits now. They've made changes to it, so maybe that's one, though it wouldn't make much sense.

eta; From their FAQ; Will my own visits to my site be counted in my flag counter?

After your first visit we set a cookie, so that a visitor is only counted once.
