In case you're wondering how to configure your 10D, or just want to know what all the various settings do, I found this article on recommended 10D settings by Chuck Westfall of Canon USA pretty interesting. He gives a short explanation for why he picks the settings he does instead of just saying "use this setting", which is nice. (Apologies if this link has been posted before. There is other interesting stuff on the site as well if you look around.)

Very cool link... much appreciated.

But I have a question... in regards to the second curtian flash (in camera with built-in flash). While in second curtain mode, my flash fires at the beginning of the exposure and then at the end of the exposure. Is that correct?

The second curtain sync will cause the flash to fire at the end of the exposure.

I believe that the 10D uses the pop up flash as an AF assist light and that would need to fire before the shutter opens if it is necessary. Also, the way E-TTL works requires an initial light pulse to evaluate the exposure, then after the shutter opens, the main pulse fires for the actual exposure.

If you see 2 flashes when you have 2nd curtain sync set, the above would be the possible reasons.

Excellent link there Eddy, thanks.

I had my settings right, but I now understand why they are right more than I did :)
