building on the debate about stock photography, maybe we should have a challenge called "unconventional" to see what everybody comes up with if it should not be general appeal

You can supply the photographs but that doesnt mean people's opinions or the way they will vote will change. That means that out of 100 attempts to be unconventional you'll find the top 3 are just the more appealing and popular than the others.

Not sure that would make a difference.
IMO, I think that the complaining is futile bc no matter what people say about stock fotos, they are the ones that win, challenge after challenge. In fact, if I ever want to win a ribbon, I will do jus that.

I just see an inconsistency on what folks say & how they vote. I think a lot of the stock fotos are really incredible & it is the technical merits that should count more than most things. I would suggest that if we were to do a challenge that could possible exclude stock fotos, then it should be placed in the challenge description or rules.

The problem with that is people would argue that something was stock when the photographer didnt have stock in mind. Some images are very stock-looking, others are probably subjective, just like artistic ones are.

I believe that talking about what folks find interesting and "high score worthy" in forums is what will change who wins challenges more than any expertly crafted sentence about a given challenge theme (that's a good thing). Given my own little world with no outside spark I can only get the best of what I have. Listening, thinking, and discussing allows more of the best of what others have to give to come to the fore.

So, you folks that challenge the status quo, push the community into exploring alternative views - do so in forums and photos. Change will be slow but...
